Australian Sea Lions, Kangaroo Island

Australian Sea Lions Kangaroo Island

Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island is home to a colony of Australian Sea Lions and is the only place in the world where you can see them this close. The park that encompasses the sea lions habitat provides tours and platforms in which you can view these adorable animals. I spotted the above two pups as I walked down to the beach with my tour guide. They were so inquisitive and as you can tell strained their neck just to follow us as we walked past.

The Australian Sea Lions were extensively hunted during earlier years and to this day the number present is still less than before the hunting began. While hunting is now no longer a problem the sea lions face entanglements and other human factors which impact their future survival.

To see the sea lions you need to head to Seal Bay Conservation Park which is about a 45 minute drive from Kingscote. Entry to the park is broken up into two main costs.

Guided 45min Tour with access to the beach and colony
– Adults $30
– Children $18

Boardwalk access which is unguided but does not allow beach access
– Adult $15
– Child $12

Personally while the boardwalk access does provide some views the beach is where all the fun happens. With tours run regularly throughout the day they would be my pick for seeing the sea lions, how can you resist the faces above.

The most amazing creature in the Aussie environs… Seal bay is awesome and a must do if you get to K.I… but I have to say its the closest you can get on shore but you can get closer and much more interaction with Baird bay eco tours sealion swin (http://www.bairdbay.com/)… this is not to take away from the superb experience offered at Seal bay…

Thanks Simon I’m just going off the information provided by the tourism folks so good to know. Since they don’t offer a swim with the sea lions tour I can see why they wouldn’t promote it either 🙂
