Leuven Town Hall shoots up from the ground to stand tall and proud as a landmark to the city. Towering high above the market square its 15th century brabant gothic looks are a sight to see, especially if you can visit on a day where the sky is as blue as the ocean. I had hoped for a little snow to make the picture perfect but alas luck wasn’t with me this time.
As seemed the way back in the day (and even today) all cities competed with each other to build the grandest and most appealing church/town hall/whatever. Leuven’s competition was Brussels as each wanted to be the capital of the country. Having seen both now I am going to have to side with the Leuven Town Hall as it really is something both inside and out.
Have you seen it?
I lived down the road (can actually see my street in the pic) from this magnificent building for a year and I never tired from seeing it on pretty much a daily basis.
Definitely superior to Brussels in my opinion!
No way Ken. I love Leuven although I’m yet to experience it when the uni students are actually in town apparently they all leave to go home on the weekends.
I have never seen that building before. It is very cool and now I want to go there.
Well I’ll be damned I’ve been somewhere Gary hasn’t 🙂 Definitely get to Leuven when you can, great little university city and its got this amazing town hall.
That is somewhat on an anomoly hey. Especially with a building that looks as amazing as this.
