Youth Mobility Visa Ultimate Guide

Youth Mobility Visa Ultimate Guide

Over 3 years ago I posted about how to apply for a Tier 5 UK Youth Mobility Visa (previously called the working holiday visa) as an Australian. I’d struggled with finding the correct information so thought to share my experience with the world in the hopes it would help somebody else. The response to my posts has been nothing short of amazing since then so to all of you who’ve joined the discussing by leaving a comment and providing more information as the process has changed I can’t thank you enough.

With so many comments full of great information I’ve decided to pull the best bits out and bring them together into one easy to read Ultimate Reference Guide on the Youth Mobility Visa. If you have a question that’s not answered by the below please leave a comment and I’ll get it answered.

To get this underway lets run over the application process as a few things have changed and I want you all to understand whats required to apply for the Tier 5 UK Visa or working holiday as it was once called.

Youth Mobility Visa – Working Holiday Visa Guide

Eligibility Requirements

  • Available to anyone from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Monaco, Hong Kong, Taiwan & Republic of Korea. (link)
  • Must be over the age of 18 and under 31 years of age at the time of application. (link)
  • Have £1,890 Pounds (Approx $3490 AUD as of 18th April 2016) in available funds at the time of applying. (link)
  • You must apply for the visa outside of the UK or from a country where you have citizenship or a valid visa that allows you to live/work there (link)

Costs

  • The Application cost for the Youth Mobility Visa is £230 Pounds (Approx $ 221 AUD as of 18th April 2016) (link)
  • If applying from Brisbane, Canberra or Perth there will also be an application fee to pay of $105 AUD at the time of your biometric appointment
  • To have your passport couriered back to you once it’s approved you can pay $24 AUD otherwise it needs to be collected from the office where you had your biometrics taken

Application Documents Required

  • Complete application form online or download and complete with a pen (offline applications are no longer accepted you must apply online)
  • Passport sized recent color photo (link)
  • Original proof of funds document. This is recommended to be an official bank statement but a letter from your bank printed on their letterhead and stamped will also be ok. It must included your name, account number, date, balance in excess of £1890 pounds and logo from your bank. (link and link)
  • Completed Appendix 7 Form (link) – Seems to have been made redundant with the new  online application process
  • Valid Passport for the duration of your visa period with a free page for the visa to be stuck on
  • Completed IHS Healthcare form and paid the fee of up to £300 for 2 years in the UK. (link).

All the above needs to be original documents meaning no photocopies, eftpos receipts or falsified paperwork.

Application Process

The whole process starts with filling out the online application form. Most of this is fairly straight forward asking for details about you. As part of the application process you’ll get to pick the start date for when your visa will begin. Keeping in mind that this date must be within 3 months of when you are completing your application. So if you intend to arrive in the UK on the 1st September you’ll need to be applying for the visa no earlier than the 1st June of the same year.

Once completed you’ll be given the option to pick a time to attend your biometric appointment. This appointment is required for them to collect a copy of your finger prints which will be used when arriving in the UK on your visa. You’ll be asked to give (usually one finger) them when being processed by customs. The entire appointment takes all of about 30-45 minutes ( be there 15 minutes early) and you will need to bring with you the following documents:

  • Completed and printed online application form
  • bank statement and other supporting documents required for the application
  • Passport photo meeting above mentioned specifications
  • Appointment booking confirmation letter
  • Passport
  • IHS Reference Number
  • A second valid form of ID like a drivers licence

Before you attend your biometric appointment you’ll need to pay the immigration healthcare surcharge (IHS). This is referenced as an IHS form. The first step is to run through this checklist to see if you need to pay a fee or not IHS healthcare checklist. If you are from Australia or New Zealand as of the 6th April 2016 you now need to pay a fee if you intend to live in the UK for longer than 6 months. The total fee is £300 to cover 2 years living in the UK.

To get your IHS reference number you need to go to this application page and click start now at the bottom. Follow the prompts and upon completion you will be emailed an IHS reference number that you should write down on your printed visa application. I’d also advise you to print off the email and take it to your biometric appointment as well due to how new this option is, it may save you some stress that way.

The biometric appointment process changed in late March 2014 and is now handled by a 3rd party visa processing company called VFS Global (except for in Adelaide which uses the old system). On attending one of their centers you’ll collect a token and wait for your turn to be called.

When called you will have your paperwork checked, pay your booking fee if applying in Brisbane, Canberra or Perth and then given a receipt which you need to keep for pickup of your passport if collecting it. At this time you can also pay to have your passport couriered back to you instead of returning to the processing office to collect it.

The second step is to have your fingerprints taken and have a digital photo of yourself taken, before they take all of your documents send if off on your behalf for processing. There is no need to provide your own envelopes for processing as the visa office is responsible for sending off and getting your passport back.

If applying in Adelaide then please follow the steps below, all others are to abide by the above.

You’ll leave the biometric appointment with a stamped application form and documentation on where to post your completed application and supporting documents off to. At last check you have 14 days from your biometric appointment to get your documents in the post to be processed.

It is advised to post your documents off in a platinum express post envelope and to included a second one for posting back to you. Take note of the tracking numbers on the envelopes for your own reference.

The above is a general overview for the entire application process. There have been major changes to the process this year (2014) with a revamped UK visa website and new processing options for applying. While I do my best to provide the most accurate information it is not always possible. If you notice a mistake or have details that can help others please leave a comment and I’ll update my records.

The Youth Mobility Visa FAQ

To make life easier I’ve also hand-picked a selection of questions and problems others have experienced and outlined them all below to save you trawling through over 500 comments.

Is the online application process confusing you?

In the last few weeks of 2013 the UKBA office rolled out a beta version of the new online application process. This has been met with quite a bit of confusion as sections of the application process have changed or aren’t being accepted correctly, which can be confusing if you’ve been researching the process online.

The problems I’m currently aware of are:

You receive an error when clicking Book Appointment – This error seems to have no solution other than to try and lodge your application again with a different email address.

UK Phone number being listed where your Australian one should be – This seems common and an obvious bug in the system, you can either leave it as is or hand write in the correct number. I imagine this will be fixed soon.

Your biometric appointment time is booked for say 2pm but it shows at 1pm on your letter – A fix seems to go back in and pick it again otherwise just turn up early so you don’t miss it.

I don’t have a UK Address or Phone Number

The new application form now ask for a UK phone number and address of you when applying. As you are yet to arrive in the UK I think this is beyond stupid to ask for but there you go. My advice is to put down the address and phone number of the place you intend to stay on arrival in the UK. This address will also form part of the where you will collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) from so be careful putting down just any address.

Not sure what a question is asking?

The Youth Mobility Visa form can be confusing so be sure to read the Guidance Notes provided by the UKBA office for help in deciphering exactly what they are asking for. This document lists notes for all questions asked on the forms to help you complete them.

How many points did you score for Attributes, English, and Maintenance?

On the application form you are asked for the number of points for Attributes, English and Maintenance. The English section does not need to be completed as it does not apply to this visa type. To calculate the numbers for the other box’s use the points calculator on the UKBA website or refer to your Appendix 7 form and get the numbers from that.

Can I fast track or get priority processing of my visa?

With the new changes to the visa process you can now apply to fast track your visa application. Costs to get priority visa processing are £100 for non-settlement applications and £300 for settlement ones. I believe this visa falls under the non-settlement category but can not confirm this.

To order priority processing of your visa you need to purchase it before attending your biometric appointment. To order the service you need to do so on this page. Then take the receipt of payment along to your biometric appointment for processing.

They aim to process all non-settlement applications within 5 days and settlement applications within 10. Again I believe this visa falls under the non-settlement category but can not confirm.

This service is not available to people attending an appointment in Adelaide.

Is there a biometric appointment office near me?

Processing offices for the biometric appointment are as below. Of note that all but Adelaide are run by VFS Global.

  • Melbourne
  • Sydney
  • Canberra
  • Brisbane
  • Perth
  • Adelaide

The address’ for these offices can be found here. If you don’t live near one of these offices then you’ll need to make the trip by land, sea or air to have your visa processed.

Do I post my application form off before the biometric appointment?

No you do not, even though the application form seems to suggest you should. You no longer post your application at all unless applying from Adelaide. All other applications are left with the visa office after your biometric appointment.

Where do I post my completed application to?

You only post your application if applying from Adelaide, all other applications are given to the VFS Global staff. The address to send your application to is:

UK Border Agency
GPO Box 2718
Sydney NSW 2001

It will then be forwarded to the processing hub in Manilla.

How long does the visa take to process?

Given my experience and feedback from others it takes anywhere between 1 – 4 weeks (usually within 2 though) from the time you post it. The processing times do vary depending on the time of year as well so recommend you check with the UKBA website here for a detailed listing of processing times.

However it seems with the new visa processing procedure a 2-3 weeks estimate seems correct at the moment.

I’ve not received any confirmation from the processing center, I’ve received one email, I’ve received nothing from the processing center?

The visa processing center has a history of not updating you on the process of your visa. Some people have reported getting emails to say their application was received, processed and shipped back while others have received nothing at all. You need not fear, there has never been a case of someones application form getting lost that I am aware of and most find their passport arrives the day after they freak out. All I can suggest is a little patience.

I have a question about the visa process who can I call or email?

You can contact the visa authority on 1300UKVISA ( 1300 858 472) but keep in mind this is a charged call of $3.50/minute and only payable via credit card. There is also an email address at [email protected] that advises you’ll receive a response within 10 days. Full details on calling for help can be found here.

Can I cancel my visa application?

If you’ve applied for your visa early or simply don’t want to go ahead with it you can cancel under certain circumstances. Refunds only seem possible if you’ve not attended your biometrics appointment yet. To cancel your visa go to the refund request page on the UKBA website and complete the form. You then wait 14 days to find out if you were successful.

Can I apply outside of Australia?

This seems to be possible but appears to be something new as previous documentation I’d read suggested you couldn’t. By visiting this section of the UKBA website you can select different countries around the world that accept visa processing. From what I can tell it will allow you to apply for a Tier 5 UK Youth Mobility Visa wherever there is a processing center providing you have a valid working visa with at least 6 months validity on it to be in that country.

When does the visa start?

You can pick the start date for your visa yourself during your application online but keep in mind it must be within 3 months of your application date. If you intend to travel around Europe before the start of your visa then you will be applying for your visa closer to the time in which you intended to fly out of Australia or allowing it to start before you get there meaning you miss some of the 2 years it is valid for.

When should the bank statement or letter be dated?

Your bank statement needs to be dated within 30 days of applying for the visa. So if you were to apply for the visa on the 1st of June your bank statement or letter must be dated after the 1st of May. The statement or letter must also show you have the total amount of funds required to meet the application requirements for the youth mobility visa.

The application form asks for my previous passports but I’ve lost it?

If you’ve had a children’s passport or an adult one and can no longer find it just state that on the form. If you have the passports great otherwise noting its lost seems to be perfectly acceptable.

Is this the same as the working holiday visa?

The working holiday visa was renamed to the youth mobility visa. During that change they also adjusted the conditions of the visa allowing you to live and work for the full 2 years of the visa where as before you could only work for 1 year.

What does family name mean?

The application will refer to your mother/fathers family name, this is asking about their maiden name.

Do I need a UK address or itinerary to apply?

Previously you did not need an UK address but on the new application form you are required to give one. You do not however need an itinerary when applying for the youth mobility visa. You will need to give a UK address to the customs officials upon entry into the UK. It is a requirement for all people entering the UK when completing the landing card.

Do I need to buy a return ticket?

There is no need to buy a return ticket when entering the UK on the Tier 5 youth mobility visa. With this visa you are essentially considered a citizen of the UK for the duration of the visa.

Will this visa let me stay in Europe for longer than 3 months?

The visa is only valid within the UK which encompasses England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Island. When travelling to Europe and in particular the countries that form the schengen zone you are only permitted to visit them for a period of 90 days within a 180 day period.

Will this visa let me work in Europe?

You will not be able to work for any company outside of the UK on this visa.

Can I enter the UK before my visa starts?

Yes but you will be entering on a tourist visa and as such are restricted to its limitations such as not being able to work. After your visa start date you should look to leave the country and re-enter on your youth mobility visa.

What if I have a DUI or criminal conviction?

During the application process you will be asked if you have any criminal convictions, this does not included fixed fines such as speeding or parking tickets unless you were required to attend court. If you have had a drink driving conviction or similar it is advised you included all paperwork when sending off your documents.

The visa office does perform criminal record checks so failing to document your record could be a reason for denying you a visa or them deferring your application until you offer more documentation to the entry clearance officer. To save potential problems it is recommended to get a print out of your court documents/extract, police reports and other supporting evidence including proof you’ve paid any fines associated with the incidents.

You are only provided a short time to provide this information if they request it so its better to have it all before you apply to save on missing out.

What is the BRP (biometric residence permit) and how do I get it?

From the 31st of May 2015 the visa office changed the visa permit process and introduced a biometric residence permit you collect once you’ve arrived in the UK. Full details on the BRP can be viewed on the UK website here

The short(ish) version of what this means is you now must enter the UK within 30 days of your noted start date for the visa. This is instead of being issued a sticker in your passport valid for the full 2 years. Now you now get issued a 30 day vignette which allows entry to the UK under your visa for a period of 30 days to collect your BRP card. If you arrive after that initial 30 day period you need to apply for another 30 day vignette (unsure of any fees or process to do this at the current point in time).

Once your visa is granted you’ll be provided with a decision letter stating at which post office and when you can collect your biometric residence permit card from. This is likely to be the closest post office to your noted address you used on the application. Please note the UK website states that you may get a penalty or your leave can be cancelled if you don’t pick up your BRP within 10 days of your arrival in the UK.

If you have queries about your BRP card or misplace documents needed to collect it you can refer to the following site for details https://www.gov.uk/biometric-residence-permits/need-brp.

At this point in time I’m yet to speak to anybody who has obtained their visa and collected a BRP card so am unable to verify any of the details above and provide it as reference only. There has been some great discussions in the comments below so if you have been issued a visa under the new process I’d love for you to leave a comment below to help others out that are looking to apply.

UPDATE 06/07/2015

An amazing follower named Mirabai has done some digging on the BRP process and found out what you do if you are unable to claim the permit within the 30 day window and received the following details from the United Kingdom Visas and Immigrations International Enquiry Service.

If the applicant has been granted a 30 day vignette and fails to enter theUK within the 30 day validity period, they must make an application for a replacement 30 day vignette by applying for a Transfer of Conditions, not as a new application for leave to enter. Application can be completed online on Visa4UK and it costs £122 to transfer your visa.

On Visa4UK website at: https://www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk, you need to select the Visa Type accordingly:

Reason for Visit: Other
Visa Type: Others
Visa Sub Type: Vignette Transfer

Further information regarding biometric residence permit can be found on https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/biometric-residence-permits-overseas-applicant-and-sponsor-information.

So it seems if you don’t enter within that 30 day window your visa can become quite the bit more expensive. A real issue for those of you applying to get in before the age limit or those unable to travel over as planned.

Do you have a question not already answered above? Then leave a comment below and I’ll try and find the answer for you as soon as possible.

Hey, at what stage is the proof of funds document needed?

Should I get a statement before I apply online or is it for the biometric appointment or when I send all the paperwork?

Also if I was to apply in the last week of 2013, I’m assuming my application would be done in accordance with 2013 requirements. I will have to have my biometrics in Jan 2014.. Just wondering if anyone else has been in that situation.

    Thanks!

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD December 18, 2013 at 12:33 AM #

Hi Jae, you need to send off your proof of funds with your application which will be after your biometric appointment. They say to get it within 30 days of applying though so I’d get it before you apply.

Your visa will be as per the requirements for when you lodge your application regardless of anything else I believe.

Hi, I am currently on a uk tier 5 visa and am in the uk. I am thinking of taking a few months out and working in Europe. I have heard there is an attachment you can put on your uk working visa allowing you to work in Europe for a small fee. Is this true and do you have any information on it?
    Thanks

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD December 18, 2013 at 12:35 AM #

Hi Tara, I’ve not heard of any such attachment to your visa to work in Europe as each county has specific work requirements and so on. If you under 30 you can apply for working visas in certain countries but thats it.

If you do find out anything I’d love to know but in all my research I’ve never heard of this.

  3. TARA December 17, 2013 at 2:27 PM #

Sorry if this has already been brought up but I am currently in the uk on a tier 5 and am wanting to work in Europe. I have heard there is an attachment you can get on your uk visa which allows you to work in Europe for a small fee on top of your uk visa fee. Is this true and do you have any information about it?
    Cheers

    Hi Aussie nomad!

I’m applying for my visa tomorrow and just have a couple of last minute questions.

    – I understand you send an extra self addressed envelope when sending the app off. Is it ok to use a po box as the return address? I was going to have it sent to my work address because sometimes I have trouble with post going to my residential address.

    – has it definitely been confirmed that you need an address In the uk to put on your application? That seems so silly as they recommend not booking anything before getting your visa …oh well!

    – do you know the timeframe for going to the biometrics appt after completing the application. Was it no later than 4 wks?

Thanks again for your help 🙂

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD December 18, 2013 at 12:38 AM #

      Hi Hannah,

For your address I don’t believe it matters where it get sent to, to be honest. A PO box is potentially better than getting it delivered in the street I’d imagine.

If you apply now then yes you do need a UK address for the application. I’d pick the address of a hostel or hotel and just using that. And I agree about asking for and address when they say not to book anything as well. I’m going to run through the new application soon and update my information as above but ay feedback you can provide from applying yourself would be great.

The timeframe for the biometrics I believe is 4 weeks yes.

Hope that helps a little and good luck.

  5. JAE December 19, 2013 at 2:24 AM #

    Thanks for the help,

Just a question about the visa photo required. On the photo information page it is stated a white background is required. Yet on the photograph guidance form it says grey or cream.

    What has everyone used?

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD December 19, 2013 at 5:49 AM #

To be honest Jae when I got my photos I never even noticed that. I just asked for passport photos at the local camera shop. I’d imagine its almost always a white background so go with that I think.

  6. JEN December 19, 2013 at 9:06 PM #

Has anyone printed the application and in the applicant contact details it has put down the UK address phone number instead of your own phone number? I filled out the online form correctly but when I print it, it seems to generate the first page with a place for your photo, but it doesn’t have my phone number in that part of the form. worldbridge said I can write my number down, is it ok to write on the application form?

Also who has a landline anymore? primary contact on the form says landline, secondary is mobile. No one these days has a landline, or at least a large majority of people don’t. I only have a mobile number.

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD December 23, 2013 at 2:05 AM #

Hi Jen, I’ve not heard reports of that problem with the form but I do know they have just rolled out a new site so it could be a little buggy. I’d just hand write in your own details to be safe.

      • MICHELLE January 7, 2014 at 2:38 AM #

I had the same problem! It has the UK’s phone number, but I will hand write mine down next to it.

      • HANNAH January 8, 2014 at 8:10 AM #

        Hi

I’ve just seen this comment and just double checked my app online mine has put the uk phone number as my landline number as well. I didn’t realise this when I sent it off last week so never changed it.

It has my mobile number further down but I’m hoping this won’t be a problem, I don’t have a landline so couldn’t add one in. I’m probably just overreacting I’m sure.

        • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 8, 2014 at 12:10 PM #

To be honest Hannah given its doing this to everyone I’m sure the visa folks are well aware of it. I wouldn’t worry.

  7. ALEC December 23, 2013 at 10:15 AM #

Thanks a heap for collating this information!

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a way to get express processing of their visa application? I have a cousin who just realised that she overlooked getting one and she is due to leave for the UK to start a job in a week!

Based on the info above it seems she can go over there on an ordinary tourist before her mobility visa is accepted – correct?? How long is the waiting period to get a biometric test in Australia and are they open before next Monday? Or would a more likely solution be to get the application processed in country close to the UK, which also seems to be possible from the info above?

    Thanks in advance!

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD December 23, 2013 at 11:49 AM #

Hi Alec, as far as I’m aware there is no fast processing available but you can call the UKBA office to be sure. With a week turn around I’m afraid your cousin is going to be out of luck especially at this time of the year as I’d imagine the visa processing times are slower now.

You also can’t go to the UK and work on a tourist visa and wait for the visa to be granted as you have to send your passport away to have the visa stamped in it (which is done in Manilla not Australia), and you can’t work on a tourist visa. You also can’t apply for it when you are out of Australia unless you have a valid visa for the country you are in.

The only options are to apply and hope it goes through in time but more realistically, delay starting the job by a couple of weeks.

      Sorry for the bad news.

  8. REHAN December 27, 2013 at 8:43 AM #

    Great writeup. Thanks!

I have a quick question that I am having trouble finding an answer to. You mention that the Visa starts (at the latest) within 3 months of the application date. Does this mean that I can enter the UK after this 3 month period, shortening my Visa length, or is the Visa rendered invalid if I do not enter within 3 months of the application date? Thanks

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD December 29, 2013 at 6:46 AM #

Hi Rehan, you need to apply for your visa within 3 months of your intended arrival in the UK. During the application process you set the start date of the visa of which you can then enter the UK and be able to live and work there. Entering before that date will mean you enter on a tourist visa and will be subject to its requirements until you leave and re-enter.

As for the visa getting rendered invalid that will not be the case. The visa starts from the day you tell it do and runs for 2 years no matter if you use it or not.

      • BRADY January 2, 2014 at 5:54 AM #

        Hey.
The one thing I don’t understand is that you’re made to apply within 3months of when you’re expected to be in England, yet according to their govt website it can take up to 3months to receive your visa, so what if your visa shows up after you’re expected to show up and you’re already over there?
eg. I’m planning on arriving on the 10th of April, I want to apply now (January 2) but that isn’t within 3 months, so do I have to wait until the 10th of January before I can get the process going?
        Thanks

        • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 2, 2014 at 6:39 AM #

Hi Brady, I’m not sure where you were looking for visa processing times but last I saw 90% of visas are processed within 2 weeks and it would only be people with criminal convictions that might take up to 3 months due to having to provide aditional information.

Your visa will never show up after you have arrived as you must send your passport away to have it stamped into it so you won’t be able to leave the country.

From previous experience I’d wait until the 10th of January to apply otherwise they may date your visa start date earlier than you would like as it can only be pre-dated 3 months in advance.

          • BRADY January 2, 2014 at 6:51 AM #

Oh, clearly I was looking at the worst case scenario rather than the general standard then, 2 weeks makes a lot more sense.
I think that the whole “biometric fingerprint” thing is a little over the top though.
Also in regards to the allocation of amount of visas Australia is given, does the country ever use them all up? And when does that number restart?
            Thanks for the info.

            • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 2, 2014 at 6:57 AM #

Yes I’m yet to see someone take longer than 2-3 weeks for a visa so you shouldn’t worry there.

For the biometric fingerprint customs actually use that when you enter the country, I had to have my finger scanned a whole bunch of times so believe its just to integrate into their systems over there.

I’ve never heard of there not being enough visas for people as I know some who just got theirs in December. As you are applying at the start of the year I’d say you would be very safe.

  9. BRONWYNN December 29, 2013 at 5:53 AM #

    Hi,
this is all good info, can you tell me something though, on the form you need to put the details of your mother & father, I know my fathers birthdate and that he was born in Sydney but not where, as we have no contact I don’t know what to do here, just put Sydney?

Hi Bronwynn, I would just enter Sydney and don’t imagine you will have problems with that.

    • ERIKA February 11, 2014 at 3:49 AM #

      Hi Bronwyn,

I am also in a similar situation where I am not sure what my Father’s place of birth is as per his passport; I only know the country that he was born in.
If you don’t mind, can you please share what you ended up putting in the application and whether your application was approved?

      thanks,
      Erika

Hey there Aussie Nomad! Thanks for this guide, you’re a star!

This might be out of your knowledge, but my question is

My signature has changed since I signed my passport, and I’m wondering 1. Will it be an issue if I sign my application form with my new signature or should I do my old one? 2. Dating those forms, should it be the date I applied online? Or the date I send off the documents in the mail?

    Thanks again for your help!

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD December 30, 2013 at 12:02 AM #

Hi Lee, for the signature for the sake of saving any potential problems I’d just sign it like on your passport. I really doubt it would be a problem but to be on the safe side it seems best.

For dating the forms it will depend on what form you are talking about but I’d normally date them the day you sign it rather than back-dating to when you applied online.

Hi I just applied for my working visa.i answered no to the question about criminal offences, although I have had speeding fines in the past.do you think I would still be approved even though I answered no?i am worried but I thought criminal activities only related to being arrested.

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD December 30, 2013 at 11:37 PM #

Hi Em, the way I see the criminal offences field is if you went to court or were convicted of something like drink driving then add it in. If you just received a speeding fine which is normally an on the spot fine you are ok.

  12. JAE January 2, 2014 at 10:06 AM #

Back again! All applied and have sent in my application on the 23rd of December but because of the holidays I am still yet to hear anything back about it. Hopefully will next week.

Hi Aussie Nomad & other readers,

I’ve just submitted my Youth Mobility Scheme application and I’m wondering – does anyone know if the embassy or the British High Commission contacts your bank to confirm the funds?

Reason I ask is because I’ve since withdrawn and converted those funds from my bank to both Euros & Pounds due to the depleting AUD. Hence, the funds shown in my bank statement are no longer the same as what I had a couple of weeks ago. These funds are now in my Multi Currency cash passport (Aus Post).

Is this going to be an issue?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  14. BRAD January 3, 2014 at 11:11 AM #

    Hi, regarding account funds-

“must be dated no earlier than 1 month before you apply for the visa.”

I’ve read mixed things on this; what I want to know is whether this means I have to get a bank statement saying I have enough funds at that time and then wait 1 month before I can apply, OR whether the statement cannot be over 1 month old at the time of applying.

    Thanks

    • BRAD January 3, 2014 at 11:16 AM #

Sorry I reread some posts and it seems like you need the funds WITHIN 30 days.
Still, the official UK border site words it as if they want a bank statement from AT LEAST 30 days before you apply.
      Thanks anyway

      • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 5, 2014 at 7:22 AM #

Hi Brad, its difficult to work out the wording at times and it seems to change so often its hard to keep up with it all. My understand is you need to get a statment or letter from the bank that is dated within 30 days of when you apply. So if you were to apply today (5th of jan) you’d need the statement from the bank to be within the last 30 days to be valid.

Hope that helps clear it up a bit for you.

          Hey aussie nomad!
I posted a question the other day – could you (or anyone!) assist by any chance?

I’ve just submitted my Youth Mobility Scheme application and I’m wondering – does anyone know if the embassy or the British High Commission contacts your bank to confirm the funds?

          • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 6, 2014 at 12:28 AM #

Hi Jaira, sorry for missing your comment the other day, sometimes it gets a bit confusing who has commented where.

As far as I’m aware the UKBA have no authority to check your bank account to see if you have the money still in there. The only proof they have is the letter/statement you send off with your application. I’m sure you’ll be just fine.

            • JAIRA January 7, 2014 at 4:24 AM #

Thank you! Have peace of mind now.
              Visa stress now averted. 🙂

  15. PIP January 6, 2014 at 5:54 AM #

    Hi Aussie Nomad

Your website is awesome! Thanks! I had a question about the 3 month period between paying and arriving. I am looking to arrive in London start of October 2014. I will be travelling Europe for all of July, August and September. When would you advise that I start applying for my visa in Australia? Also I’ve been doing a lot of research but I thought you might have a better idea on my other question. I will be working as a supply teacher and probably living in somewhere like SW London in shared accommodation. I am going with my boyfriend but he is too old to apply for the youth mobility visa and will be studying externally. We will have some savings to live off but are hoping to survive with just my pay. We will only be living there for about 4 months and won’t be looking to save, just experience London on a budget. Are we crazy? We’ve done 3 years in Canada where money was terrible so we are used to living on a budget but I would like to think we can actually afford to eat and drink out every now and then! Any advice would be awesome! Thanks!

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 6, 2014 at 6:07 AM #

Hi Pip, thanks for the kind words about the site, its just what I need to start the new year off with.

As for applying for your visa you’ll want to give yourself a month minimum to apply and get the visa back (most takes 2 weeks from send off to get back and you’ll need a week or so to schedule in your biometric appointment). What all that means is that you’ll need to start your visa before you intend to arrive at the start of October in the UK.

If you are flying out for Europe for the start of July I’d look to apply mid April to be sure you don’t stress to much about your visa not coming in time. This means you’ll need to set a start date for your visa for mid July, a couple of months before you get to the UK. As you don’t intend to stay for the full 2 years it seems that shouldn’t be a problem to miss out on a couple of months visa time.

In terms of budget etc I’ve no idea what sort of money you’ll be making as a supply teacher but can tell you that I was paying 750 pounds a month for rent and bills in a share house in Fulham. You can get cheaper but as there will be the two of you looking to rent the cost might be a bit higher. Just a matter of hunting around on gumtree I think there.

The thing about London however is that while accommodation and transport are expensive food is not. You’ll be able to go out and eat at pubs and other places very cheaply, just don’t get a take-away pizza they are stupidly expensive (20 pounds or so).

Hope that helps you out a bit.

      • PIP January 6, 2014 at 6:42 AM #

Thanks for your quick reply and for the advice on accommodation! I think supply teachers make about 120 a day (from what I’ve found on the internet but if anyone reads this and knows for sure I’d love to know) so that should be doable taking into account we’ll be paying a little extra as couple. I’ll start looking to apply for my visa in April. And we won’t be getting takeaway pizza ; ) Thanks again!

  16. MICHELLE January 6, 2014 at 10:09 AM #

    Hi Aussie Nomad!

Thanks for your website, great tips.

I am just applying for my youth mobility scheme today and am wondering about this UK address and phone number that is required information. Would it be possible I use the UK hostel address (first accommodation when I arrive) and phone number do you think? Slightly confused.

    Thanks so much, Michelle.

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 6, 2014 at 11:45 PM #

Hi Michelle, yes I’d just use the address and phone number of the first place you intend to stay when in the UK. It seems stupid for them to ask for those details given you aren’t there yet so I’m not sure if its a bug in the site or what.

      • MICHELLE January 7, 2014 at 1:42 AM #

Thanks very much mate! I ended up using my friend’s place and contact number. Have booked my biometrics appointment after 2 different bank branches couldn’t help me/didn’t get the letter right, lucky the third one worked!

Thanks so much again for all your help, it really is much appreciated!

        • MICHELLE January 9, 2014 at 3:57 AM #

Hi Nomad, just had the biometric appointment, but thought I should tell you that they require a copy of the ID page of your passport as well as all the other documents (for the sending off to the office, not to the appointment). Thanks so much for allaying any fears about the appointment, fingers crossed I get the VISA, have sent off all paperwork today!

  17. NICOLE January 6, 2014 at 11:36 PM #

    Hi Aussie Nomad,

Great work on this site and I am amazing by your commitment to responding to everyone’s questions! Awesome!

I have a question regarding the application process, I am using the beta system and it seems to be a bit buggy. I have filled in my application following all the tips on your site, done! I am now at the point where I have to click ‘Book Appointment’ and BAM ERROR! It says “An error occurred while processing your request, this could have been caused by your session timing out. If you have been logged out, please login again.”…. I can’t get any further and am stressing out! I have logged in and out numerous times and tried different web browsers but still no luck.

I am at the point of calling that 1300 number and forking out to ask them, however I thought I would check with you first and see if you had any ideas??

    Appreciate your help!

    Nicole.

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 6, 2014 at 11:43 PM #

Hi Nicole, I know what it was like trying to find out information myself when I applied so happy to give back a bit and ensure everybody else gets a bit of a helping hand.

I know of one other person who has had problems with the beta site and they called the UKBA office. They were advised to wait 7 days for their application to expire and then to start again… Not the best news but its an option. If you are not in a rush to apply that is going to be the easiest answer.

If on the other hand you need to submit it quickly I’d try another web browser or computer in case there is a problem with their system and your computer. It’s a long shot but I’ve worked in IT long enough to know the simple solutions are often the best ones.

      • NICOLE January 7, 2014 at 12:06 AM #

        Thank you for the info!!!

I did try doing another application and had the same result, however that may be because the other one was still active (I can’t recall if I waited 7 days).

I feel rushed as I leave on the 23 March, however I have read on this site that turn-around times are around 2 weeks so perhaps I’m worrying for no reason…

I might try registering another account and trying another browser+computer as you have suggested – fingers crossed.

        Thanks again,

        Nicole.

        • NICOLE January 7, 2014 at 12:46 AM #

Further update to the issue with the website error – registering another account and re-applying worked!! The only real change was that I registered using a different email to make sure they didn’t wonder why I was registering twice…

Finally submitted my application and booked in for the biometric assessment yay!

Thanks so much Aussie Nomad for the info! Keep up the good work.

          Nicole.

  18. KATIE January 8, 2014 at 3:02 AM #

    Hi there!

I found your website so helpful! I was just wondering if you know how likely it would be to get a work visa for the UK if you do have a DUI. I have just been charged with a DUI, I have paid the fine and will be loosing my license for three months. If I provide all the proper paper work, do you think there is still a good chance I could be rejected?

    Thanks!

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 8, 2014 at 3:26 AM #

Hi Katie, I know of at least 2 people who’ve commented here that had a DUI and still got the visa but have not heard of anybody being rejected for it or well anything to be honest.

I think as long as you provide all the police paperwork etc during your application there is a fair chance you’ll be just fine. While a DUI isn’t great there are far worse things you can do that they would deny you for in my opinion.

  19. B January 8, 2014 at 10:53 PM #

    Hi Nomad,

Thank you for the handy site. A question, I don’t have my old passport details (from when I was a kid and did travel briefly through UK). Does this matter?

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 8, 2014 at 10:56 PM #

Hi B, if you don’t have it just write down that it was lost, its what I did when applying and had no problems.

  20. SANDRA January 9, 2014 at 5:24 AM #

I am in UK on youth mobility visa and hold a NZ passport. Once I finish two years on the YM visa do I have to exit right away or I come on being a tourist visa automatically?

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 9, 2014 at 11:16 AM #

Hi Sandra, once your visa comes up to it’s expirey date you need to leave before it passes. You can then re-enter on a tourist visa but be prepared for the customs officers asking you why you are returning etc. I’d be sure to have proof you will leave the UK as well.

In my experience being prepared will save you a lot of potential hassle as I’ve been almost denied entry since.

  21. DANA January 9, 2014 at 12:07 PM #

    Hi!

Love all the info you’ve given out but there’s one question that I have for applying for my visa. As I’m wanting to leave asap after my 18th birthday for the UK on a T5YMS I need to apply for a new adult passport as my child’s one doesn’t have enough validity left on it for flights (Expires June want to leave early March). I’m just wondering if at all I can send my child passport away which is still valid at the moment and get the visa in that passport and just carry both with me at the airport and such?

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 9, 2014 at 12:25 PM #

Hi Dana, your passport needs to have at least 6 months validity on it to apply for the visa. I’m sure I remember reading it in there somewhere (can’t look it up at the moment) because you need at least 6 months to fly so am sure the same rules apply.

So I’d say apply for your new passport ASAP and then apply for the visa.

      • DANA January 9, 2014 at 12:43 PM #

Thank you for such a quick reply! I’ve been looking everywhere and have been trying to find this answer to my question for the last week almost (no thanks to the UK Australian Embassy’s).
So I was going to get priority processing on my Passport and hoping to get it back by the 18th of Feb (7 days after my birthday). How long is the wait to make a booking for a biometric scan generally? So I was hoping to send off all my forms around the 20th of Feb and hopefully be touching down in the UK by the 10th of March. Do you think this a realistic date or should I push the date back further?
Thanks again for your help!! It’s greatly appreciated!

        • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 9, 2014 at 12:48 PM #

The visa process can take 2-3 weeks on average from start to finish with your passport back in your hand. I’d say your timeframe would be very tight and if just one thing gets delayed you might be in trouble.

You can book into the biometric appointment reasonably quickly I believe but honestly can’t say if you would get in the very next day as it depends on their scedule of appointments.

          • DANA January 9, 2014 at 1:06 PM #

Okay then! Thank you for your time and help it’s cleared up the things I was most confused about with the visa! Hopefully I won’t have to push the date back too far!

            • JAIRA January 10, 2014 at 3:50 AM #

Hey Dana, if it helps – after I paid for the VISA online, I arranged for my biometrics 2 days after and it all went pretty smoothly. I sent the application on Fri 3rd Jan, and just received my email from Manila today advising the passport will be back with be in approx 3 days time.

However, my partner who sent his application on the same day still hasn’t received his email just yet so it must just vary…

In saying that, my agent told me they still process things pretty quickly regardless of holiday periods.

              Hope that helps!

    • DANA January 18, 2014 at 1:15 AM #

Okay replying to my own post because I finally got an email back from the UK Visa guys. They said that as long as the passport is valid then I’m able to apply using it and will just have to transfer my visa over to my new passport when the time comes!

Hope this will help anyone else out who had the same problem as me!

      • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 18, 2014 at 1:54 AM #

Hi Dana, thanks for coming back and updating us on your progress. That’s good information to know and am sure it will be helpful for others in the future.

  22. MONIQUE January 12, 2014 at 12:53 AM #

    Hello Aussie Nomad!

What a great site and source of information.
With the 2 year working visa, is it possible to just apply for one year or does the whole two years have to be used?
Also I am currently living in NZ, moving to France in March – do you know if it is possible to apply for a UK visa in France (on a tourist visa)?
Apologies if this info has already been questioned/answered (I had a good search)

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 12, 2014 at 10:31 PM #

Hi Monique, the visa is a 2 year visa so there is no way to just apply for one year. But you can stay as long or as short as you like within the 2 year validity of it.

You can only apply for the visa from a country in which you have a working permit to stay. So if you are in France on a tourist visa you will not be able to apply as far as I understand the rules.

  23. ANNA January 12, 2014 at 9:35 AM #

    Hi,

I have applied for Irish citizenship through foreign birth registry, however this has not been approved as yet. I have now applied for a youth mobility visa, as citizenship was taking too long.

Will the fact that I have applied for Irish citizenship affect my UK visa application? I am an Australian citizen with an australian passport.

Also I have 5 and a 1/2 weeks from my biometric appointment to when my flights leave, do you think this is enough time?

    Thankyou,
    Anna

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 12, 2014 at 10:33 PM #

Hi Anna, I don’t see a problem with the 2 different visas as one is for the UK and the other will be for Ireland correct? If so given they are separate countries you will be fine.

As for the time to get your visa processed, I think that should be enough as most visa’s are processed within 2 weeks once they have been posted off so just get it in the post ASAP.

  24. HANNAH January 14, 2014 at 5:30 AM #

    Hey Aussie Nomad,

I just wanted to let you know I got my email saying my visa was approved today! YAY!!

I also wanted to say a huge thank you to you for putting up with all of my questions – I don’t think I would have done this without your useful information and tips.

I’m sure I have been stressing about nothing but you have made myself and I’m sure many others feel at ease with this blog.

I have been recommending this site to all of friends doing similar things as there is nothing like this online.

Keep up the good work – you’re a champ!

    Cheers 🙂

    Great site!!!!

I currently have a Youth Mobility Visa (Tier 5) & have been offered a job working for a UK company but seconded out in France, because it is a UK company & contract is there a time limit I can work out there or does the 90 days apply??

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 18, 2014 at 1:04 AM #

Hey mate, I’m afraid your UK visa only grants you the ability to live and work in the UK, heading to France will only allow you to be there as a tourist so you can’t work I’m afraid unless getting an equivalent visa there as far as I understand the rules.

  26. THOM January 18, 2014 at 12:44 AM #

    Hey mate,

Great website! I am wondering about Drink Driving issues.

About 6 years ago I was caught drink driving and charged in a magistrates court for a low range (0.07 I believe). I cannot find any court outcome document in my possession, and my national police check came back with no disclosable outcomes against my name.

The VAF9 form states that I need to provide all documentation for drink driving offences. I would like to disclose it, but it seems then I wouldnt be able to back it up with outcome docs, and I am worried that would cause an issue.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Can you provide advice?

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 18, 2014 at 12:55 AM #

Hey Thom, I’m not 100% sure what the new application form ask for and if there is a cutoff time for it in terms of how many years they go back but I’d imagine you could get court documents if you applied via the courts or similar. I’m not 100% how you go about it but think getting anything you can would be beneficial as if you do write it down you may be asked to provide documents for them to review.

      • THOM February 13, 2014 at 3:13 AM #

        Hi again,

Just to follow up for anyone in a similar position, my passport came back today complete with APPROVED VISA 🙂

I sent the following in my application, along with a copy of the national police check:
“I HAD A DRINK DRIVING CHARGE IN LATE 2006. THE
OFFENCE WAS LOW RANGE OF 0.07, AND RESULTED IN
3 MONTHS LICENCE SUSPENSION AND A 400 DOLLAR
FINE. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO LOCATE RECORDS OF
THIS CHARGE, BUT HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL. I RAN
A NATIONAL POLICE CHECK FOR MY NAME TOO, WHICH
CAME BACK CLEAR OF ANY RECORDS. I THEREFORE
BELIEVE IT MUST BE SPENT AND/OR NOT RECORDED
AS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE AS IT IS ONLY SLIGHTLY
        ABOVE LEGAL LIMIT OF 0.05.”

        Timeframe was as follows:
        Online application completed 18th Jan
        Biometrics appointment 28th Jan
        All items posted 28th Jan
Passport received in Brisbane 13th Feb

        Cheers

  27. JORDAN January 18, 2014 at 1:44 AM #

    Hi!

Just wondering when booking a biometric scan do I have to pay for my visa before or after the scan? Or will it not be a confirmed booking unless I pay for my visa?

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 18, 2014 at 1:52 AM #

Hi Jordan, you pay for the visa after completing your online application and then you book your biometric appointment.

  28. SHELBY January 19, 2014 at 1:24 PM #

    Hi there,

So my tier 5 youth mobility visa runs out in april although i have spent a lot of months traveling outside the UK in this time of my visa. Does this mean that my visa will run out when i have been in the uk for 24 months overall or will it still run out in april as its exactly 2 years since i first entered the UK?
    Hope this makes sense…

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 20, 2014 at 12:23 AM #

Hi Shelby, your visa is set to start and end by the dates stamped on it in your passport. Whether you spend that whole 2 years in the UK is irrelevant to how long the visa is valid for I’m afraid.

  29. MIKE January 21, 2014 at 2:51 AM #

    Hi mate,

My wife and I are both applying for a tier 5 youth mobility visa. Do you suggest we send our applications and supporting docs in the same envelope, including providing just one return envelope between us, or should we post our applications seperately?

    Cheers

  30. BEC January 21, 2014 at 1:35 PM #

    Hi,

Great website! I wish I had found this a few weeks ago when I was going through hell applying for my visa!!! Anyway, I got my visa back today (yay! and exactly 2 weeks from when I posted it off!) and am leaving for London next Tuesday. I have found a really great flat through my teaching job but they require a bond to be paid before I arrive. The problem is that I am going on a very tight budget and only have 1900 pounds. Do I need to prove that I have this money when I enter the UK or can I use some of the money now to pay my deposit?

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 22, 2014 at 1:29 AM #

Hi Bec, there is no need to provide proof of the funds when entering the UK that I’m aware of. Unless the customs officers pull you aside I’m sure you’ll be just fine.

  31. ROSIE January 22, 2014 at 3:55 AM #

    Hi there,

I’m just going through the process of filling out the visa application form and I have come to the question about traffic offences.

I have been fined for speeding in Queensland once before about 2 years ago. How did you fill in the box with all the details of your offence? Do they need specific details or just general?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi Rosie, unless you went to court for the speeding file I wouldn’t put it down on your application as it wouldn’t be classed as a criminal conviction.

If you did go to court then you’d need to provide all the court documents related to your offence for them to review.

      • DELILAH BROWN October 9, 2014 at 10:19 AM #

        Hi there,

Thanks for all the info you have on here.

I am in a similar boat, I have a minor traffic infringement where I went through a traffic light that was turning red, and another for using a Transit Lane when they first got introduced…

If I do not include these, and they find out about them, will be application be affected do you think? Or should I just be honest and include them with a letter explaining what happened? I am afraid that my application may get refused, even though they are not criminal convictions…
        Cheers for your time,
        Delilah

        • THE AUSSIE NOMAD October 12, 2014 at 2:57 PM #

Hi Delilah, as your incidents are only minor traffic offences and not criminal convictions I’d not included them at all. They (from my understanding and of no legal standing) are only worried about people who have criminal convictions that could be a problem for people in the UK. I’d just apply as normal and you should be fine.

  32. ROSIE January 22, 2014 at 4:20 AM #

Thank you very much I realised this straight after I posted the comment that the speeding fine doesn’t need to be included as it wasn’t criminal!

I am at the end of my application and it has a section that is called ‘Points Claimed’ and it has 4 areas which I need to fill it –

    Nationality –
    Age –
    Maintenance (Funds) – ?
Total – (total points you are claiming) ?

The last two I am confused about as I’m not sure what to fill in the boxes. You said that the Appendix Form 7 is no longer needed but I don’t know where to get the points from….

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 22, 2014 at 4:24 AM #

Hi Rosie, the points claimed section is taken from the original appendix 7 form so you can use that as a bit of a guide. I think that form has the points table on it from memory.

  33. BRADY January 22, 2014 at 4:29 AM #

Hey, so I filled out my application form and already got my biometric fingerprint session done, the only thing I’m concerned about is that on my form under funds I wrote ‘2100’ for £2100, I converted the amount of $AU I had even though on the bank statement I’m providing it says the amount I have in $AU. Also when asked if I had had previous passports I wrote in the two that I had, one was stolen and one was an emergency that I had to hand in when I applied for my new passport. I don’t know the document details or anything about them because I no longer have either. Will either of these 2 things be an issue and since I’ve had my biometric fingerprints taken and application stamped (but not sent off yet) is it too late regardless?
    Thanks

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 22, 2014 at 4:35 AM #

Hi Brady, I don’t think you need to worry about the amount being converted to AU as they will be expecting that.

As for your passports, just make sure you noted that you don’t have them anymore and that should be ok. It’s what I did for my previous passport.

  34. MARIJA January 22, 2014 at 2:07 PM #

Hey guys. I come from Macedonia and I have to apply for a UK online visa for my boss. I completed the application and I signed the declaration. However, when I reached the Book appointment section all I got was “An error occurred while processing your request. This could have been caused by your session timing out. If you have been logged out, please login again.” What should I do? I tired to register using a new email address but I haven’t got a registration confirmation email yet. I’m going out of my mind. PLEASE help

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 23, 2014 at 3:09 AM #

Hi Marija, that sounds like a different visa to the YMS visa that I’ve written about here I’m afraid. Your best guess would be to call the UK visa office in your country to seek assistance I’m afraid.

  35. MARIA January 23, 2014 at 12:50 AM #

    Hiya
Kudos for the website, it’s real good!
Long time reader, first time poster.

There are 2 kinds of UK YMS visas, temp worker & what i call freelance i suppose, temp worker states you need 1800 pounds on arrival ( providing bank statements prior to this) & the other states the funds have to be sitting in the account  for 90 consecutive days, which i have over 15,000 , yet  if i need to move funds across to other accounts, would this jepordise my application because i have not had the plateau amount in the account for 90 consecutive days even though it exceeds the required amount which comes to about 8,000 pounds? .
Or does my bank statement have to say I’ve had at least 1800 pounds or $4,000 AUS in the bank for 90 days?

    Cheers Maria

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 23, 2014 at 3:04 AM #

Hi Maria, I’ve never heard of two different UK YMS visas before, do you have details on the two of them from the UKBA site? The YMS visa is the old working holiday visa so not really a temp worker or freelance visa either.

For the YMS visa that I’m aware of you only need proof that you have the 1800 pounds from a bank statement or letter from your bank manager within the 30 days of your application so moving money around shouldn’t matter as long as you have the proof to back up what is asked of you.

  36. MAJ January 23, 2014 at 2:50 AM #

    Hiya

If my visa starts on 1 April and I want to enter in June, is that allowed? Are there time constraints in terms of entering after the start of the visa?

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 23, 2014 at 2:58 AM #

HI Maj, you can come and go as much as you like on the visa so entering in June when the visa starts in April is fine.

      • MAJ January 23, 2014 at 4:40 PM #

        Ooh!

What about opening a bank account? I was thinking of going through 1st contact to avoid the hassle, but I read somewhere that if I change my address to my UK address, and get my Aussie bank to forward a bank statement there, that would work fine?

        M.

        (Thanks!)

  37. SIMONE January 23, 2014 at 3:51 AM #

    Hi,

I’d just like to ask at what stage in the application process can you apply to cancel your visa? I am not concerned about losing the processing fee, however, I’d like to know if I can cancel the application and apply for a new one in 6-12 months time.

    Thanks!

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 23, 2014 at 7:27 AM #

Hi Simone, I honestly don’t know the answer to cancelling your visa but I’d imagine you could do so right up until you posted it off. I’d call the UKBA office on the number I’ve listed above and see what they say.

  38. 1223 January 23, 2014 at 4:59 AM #

    hi

just want to know what is consider as “date of application” … is it the date that you submit the documents and do the birometrics? or when you apply online?
and how can they know you where in Australia and not other country when you apply online?? through the passport??

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 23, 2014 at 7:36 AM #

I’d consider date of application be when you complete the online form and pay your money.

As for knowing where you apply, well I guess they can’t know exactly but given it would be impossible to apply in Australia while you are in Europe as you’d be unable to attend your biometric appointment they can quickly narrow it down.

      • 1223 January 24, 2014 at 2:55 AM #

thanks for your feedback. i was in Europe for holidays, applied the 25 dec online and then come back to Australia the week after and i completed the biometrics and sent the paper work…. do you think i will have a problem?

        • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 24, 2014 at 5:33 AM #

I don’t think you’ll have a problem at all because you are in Australia to do all the bits you are required to. Where you fill out the online section is irrelevant.

      • AARON ADAMS February 27, 2014 at 4:09 AM #

Just to confirm, this very very VERY helpful PDF:

        https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/270574/tier5youthmobilityguidance.pdf

Says this about the date of application, as of January 2014:

“The date of application will, in all cases, be taken to be the date that the fee associated with the application is paid. This means the date shown on your payment receipt, which depends on how you paid for your visa application, for example, at a British Diplomatic Post, visa application centre or online.”

My girlfriend and I are up against a 31st birthday deadline, so this was a very helpful piece of information.

  39. SAM January 23, 2014 at 5:03 AM #

    Hey mate,
Just a question in regards to the passport photograph that is required.
It states that it must be 35 x 45 mm and the background must be white. So today I went in to Australia Post and got them taken, however the background to the shot is very light but not quite ‘pure white’. I’d say its almost like a cream colour.
Also the whole photographs dimensions are 35 x 45 mm however there is approximately 2 mm and 5 mm of space above/below and on either side of my face respectively. For example from ear to ear is 25 mm and from chin to the top of scalp is 35 mm, could this possibly be a problem? Have you heard of many people being knocked back due to their passport photo’s?

And lastly, approximately how many days do i have to post the documents after the biometric appointment (in case I need to get more photos)?
Many thanks for all your help!

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 23, 2014 at 7:39 AM #

Hi Sam, I’ve never heard of anybody ever being knocked back let alone any problems with photos. They do check your photos at the biometric appointment so always good to ask then if you are worried.

I believe you have 4 weeks to get your form in from when you’ve been the to biometric appointment so plenty of time to get new photos if need be.

  40. MARIA January 23, 2014 at 5:31 AM #

Heya thanks for getting back to me, there is different catergories of the tier 5.

    YMS points calculator says:

You must have £1,800 of available funds in your account and these funds must have been continuously in your account for a period of 90 consecutive days when you apply (other than applicants to the Youth Mobility scheme, who must only have the funds in their account on the date of application).

  41. MARIA January 23, 2014 at 5:34 AM #

And I just re-read this and realised I had obviously mis read it! Hahaha thanks and sorry.

  42. ROSIE January 23, 2014 at 5:37 AM #

    Hi,

I have completed my application form yesterday 22/01/14 and picked a date and time for my biometric appointment in Brisbane on the 17/02/14. This is a couple of days short of being 4 weeks after completing my application. Do I have to post it off and have it recieved within 4 weeks as well?

Very stressed that I have forgotten something or left the time between completing the appication and biometric too long.

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 23, 2014 at 7:51 AM #

Hi Rosie, no you don’t need to have it posted off and received within 4 weeks you just need to have had your biometric appointment within 4 weeks of completing your online application.

  43. IAN January 24, 2014 at 5:18 AM #

    Hi there:)

Im looking to working over in the Greek islands, so goin by your information this youth mobility scheme is the way to go….

But im also looking to work in Europe also after i have finished with the Greek islands, will this youth mobility scheme allow me to work over there or will i need to apply for something different?

Dont the Greek islands and some Europe country’s fall under the ‘Schengen area’?

would be great to hear back from you, with your info….

    Kind Regards
    Ian

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 24, 2014 at 5:27 AM #

Hi Ian, the youth mobility visa is only valid for the UK and not mainland Europe, so you won’t be able to work anywhere but in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland I’m afraid.

Some Schengen countries do offer their own working holiday visas but it varies from country to country so you’d need to research them some to see what would fit for you.

  44. ADAM G January 26, 2014 at 4:42 AM #

    Hi Aussie Nomad,

Great website! I sent off my application form with all required docs this Monday and also tracked it all the way to being delivered to Sydney, so I would assume it is now on its way to Manila for processing.

    Just had 2 questions/info:

    1) I sent it off in a normal express post envelope, rather than a platinum and it got there fine. Hopefully not an issue on the way back given I enclosed a normal express post envelope. Just was not able to insure the express post envelope for some reason.

    2) I just checked the letter from the bank I sent over and the lady at the bank did date it correctly with 16 Jan 2014 and the stamp also has 16 Jan 2014 on the letter. However she did a typo and wrote “balance at 16/01/2012”. Only noticed it just now but was wondering if points of clarification are sought from the VISA processing centre? My funds are fine and the only error is that the lady wrote 2012 in 1 spot rather than 2014 like it was stated in all other dates of the letter.

Annoying as I just reviewed the docs and saw that.

Any help or info is appreciated.

    Thanks

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 28, 2014 at 2:17 AM #

Hi Adam, I would’t worry re the type of envelope you have to sent back. As long as its got your address on it you will be fine.

For the bank letter I’d imagine as long as it has 2014 on it in all the other places they should be able to work out that it was typo for that one spot with 2012. I’d imagine if there was any big concern they’d inform you first but doubt there will be a problem.

      • ADAM G January 28, 2014 at 4:58 AM #

        Hi Aussie Nomad.

        Thanks for the reply!

Great to hear about the envelope.

Also I actually just got the email from the [email protected] email address stating that my visa would be despatched shortly. So hopefully all is well and it will be with me soon. Now to play the waiting game.

        Thanks again
        Adam G

        • LUKE February 2, 2014 at 3:34 AM #

          Hi Adam,

Just a question regarding processing times – I just applied a week after yourself.

Am I right in saying that you sent the application on Monday the 20th and received an email saying it had been dispatched on the 28th?

Is it okay to ask when you might have received the passport, and if you received an email letting you know they had received it in Manilla?

          Thanks!

  45. JENNIFER January 28, 2014 at 7:13 AM #

Hi, thanks for the helpful information but i’m currently confused about travelling Europe on the YMS visa. If I spend 3 months in the Schengen area, and go back to Britain for another 3, that makes it more or less 180 days so does it mean I can go back to the Schengen area for another 3 months? (sorry if it sounds confusing…)

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 31, 2014 at 1:57 PM #

Hi Jennifer, you are correct. If you spend 3 months in the Schengen zone and then go and spend 3 months in the UK you’ll be free to head back into the Schengen zone.

      • JENNIFER February 6, 2014 at 12:40 PM #

Hi thanks very much for the help and information. I just completed the application form, and I selected ‘return in person’ for the passport or something, I remember there was another option of ‘return by post’, does that mean that now i have to go to sydney to pick up my passport…? (confused……………………………….very confused….)

        • THE AUSSIE NOMAD February 7, 2014 at 12:51 AM #

I really don’t know Jennifer. Best to call the UKBA office and find out exactly but I’d imagine yes you’d need to go and pick up your passport from somewhere. Maybe the local post office or it could be Sydney.

  46. JEN January 29, 2014 at 6:54 PM #

My visa starts in March but I want to go into the UK in February to attend some interviews, can I do that before my YMS visa is valid? Will there be any issues, the world bridge customer service said you can’t but some posts here say you can?

Has anyone travelled to the UK before the YMS visa is valid?

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 31, 2014 at 2:09 PM #

Hi Jen, you can enter the UK before your visa starts but you’ll only be in the country as a tourist so going for a job interview is technically against that so be sure to not mention any of that when you enter early and be sure to have a ticket out of the country to prove you will be leaving and coming back on your working visa.

To make your visa valid you’d need to leave the UK and then re-enter after your visa has started to be legal to work and so on.

  47. ANDREW January 30, 2014 at 1:17 PM #

    Hi All

My wife has applied for a Youth Mobility Visa to the UK and we have the appointment on Monday. Just a couple of rather drastic questions. The first, we are hoping to request a speedy application due to a family member terminally ill, will they prioritise for this?
Second, my wife had a DUI charge back in ’05 and was suspended until early ’07. She now has a full licence and was worried that she may have actually needed to put it in the app. She does have a passport and got that in ’09 with no hassles so Im hoping the DUI charge has been spent and she wont need to tell them?

    Cheers

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 31, 2014 at 2:18 PM #

Hi Andrew, its not possible to request a speedy application I’m afraid. The biometric appointment is just to take your fingerprints and check your application, nothing else. They won’t be able to help you speed up the application as its then sent off to manila for processing. Most visa’s are processed in 2 weeks as well which is reasonably quick I believe.

If your wife went to court for her DUI or the DUI is recorded against her police record then she’ll need to declare that and include all the paperwork from the court to show what it was for etc. To be sure thought I’d be calling the UKBA office and verify exactly as all of my advice is just from my experiences others have reported, its by no way legal and accurate.

      • ANDREW February 1, 2014 at 2:25 AM #

Thanks Aussie Nomad, I think we’ll get the paperwork requested in the meantime to be safe. 2 weeks is pretty quick anyhow so fingers crossed. Thanks again for the advice 🙂

  48. LAUREN January 31, 2014 at 3:33 AM #

Hi! Your website here has been so helpful! this whole process is rather confusing!
I have just submitted my application and have a date for my Biometric interview on Tuesday.
I went through the website https://www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk/

My appointment is in Adelaide at The British Consulate Level 3, 55 currie st.
I am a little concerned as i dont think we have a british consulate in adelaide and after alot of google searching i can only find the department of immigration at that address.
Would you or anyone who has applied from adelaide know if that is the correct location? I have a feeling i may have to go to Melb and would rather know asap!

    Thank you!

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD January 31, 2014 at 2:37 PM #

Hi Lauren, I’m not aware of a processing office in Adelaide either but if the paperwork you were given after completing the online application says thats where to go then you should be ok. I’d love to hear how you get on afterwards if you could leave a comment for me.

      • LAUREN February 4, 2014 at 6:44 AM #

        Hi

I had my Biometrics done in Adelaide this morning at the Department of Immigration. Was in and out within 5 minutes. Very straight forward and easy! Was given info on where to post all the forms off to and headed straight to the post office. Now eagerly awaiting the return of my VISA. .. i Just realised i didnt send in a copy of the ID page of my passort… crap!

  49. SAM February 1, 2014 at 5:08 AM #

    Hi Aussie Nomad

You’re information has been really helpful. I only have one question which i haven’t been able to get the same answer from anyone that I’ve been asking. My fiancé and i are applying for our Youth Mobility visa. Only thing is we want to backpack around europe first for 2 months then head over to the UK to start work. With the visa, do we need to fly into the UK first then start travelling around Europe, or can we travel around, ending in Belgium, then head over to the UK?

    Thanks

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD February 1, 2014 at 12:00 PM #

Sam, you can enter the UK whenever you want to before or after the visa starts. If you enter the UK before the visa starts you’ll be doing so on a tourist visa so its worth having proof you intend to leave to satisfy the customs folks as they may be concerned you will just stay and not re-enter to be validated as entered on your visa.

If you enter a month or two after your visa starts it won’t matter either you’ll just have lost a couple of months of your allocated 2 years in the UK.

  50. ANDREW February 1, 2014 at 8:42 AM #

    Hi Aussie Nomad

Have now sent off the freedom of information to NSW police for only $30 and put it on app.

Just one more question, I’m fine to travel to UK as I have duel passports (British and Aus) but i’m wondering if this will affect my wife’s visa app, i.e. does she have to be single? I’m prob just overthinking and worrying too much!

    Cheers Again

    • THE AUSSIE NOMAD February 1, 2014 at 11:57 AM #

Hi Andrew, it doesn’t matter who or how she travels into the UK. The visa is just for her and is completely independant of you.
