Over 3 years ago I posted about how to apply for a Tier 5 UK Youth Mobility Visa (previously called the working holiday visa) as an Australian. I’d struggled with finding the correct information so thought to share my experience with the world in the hopes it would help somebody else. The response to my posts has been nothing short of amazing since then so to all of you who’ve joined the discussing by leaving a comment and providing more information as the process has changed I can’t thank you enough.
With so many comments full of great information I’ve decided to pull the best bits out and bring them together into one easy to read Ultimate Reference Guide on the Youth Mobility Visa. If you have a question that’s not answered by the below please leave a comment and I’ll get it answered.
To get this underway lets run over the application process as a few things have changed and I want you all to understand whats required to apply for the Tier 5 UK Visa or working holiday as it was once called.
Youth Mobility Visa – Working Holiday Visa Guide
Eligibility Requirements
- Available to anyone from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Monaco, Hong Kong, Taiwan & Republic of Korea. (link)
- Must be over the age of 18 and under 31 years of age at the time of application. (link)
- Have £1,890 Pounds (Approx $3490 AUD as of 18th April 2016) in available funds at the time of applying. (link)
- You must apply for the visa outside of the UK or from a country where you have citizenship or a valid visa that allows you to live/work there (link)
Costs
- The Application cost for the Youth Mobility Visa is £230 Pounds (Approx $ 221 AUD as of 18th April 2016) (link)
- If applying from Brisbane, Canberra or Perth there will also be an application fee to pay of $105 AUD at the time of your biometric appointment
- To have your passport couriered back to you once it’s approved you can pay $24 AUD otherwise it needs to be collected from the office where you had your biometrics taken
Application Documents Required
- Complete application form online
or download and complete with a pen(offline applications are no longer accepted you must apply online) - Passport sized recent color photo (link)
- Original proof of funds document. This is recommended to be an official bank statement but a letter from your bank printed on their letterhead and stamped will also be ok. It must included your name, account number, date, balance in excess of £1890 pounds and logo from your bank. (link and link)
Completed Appendix 7 Form (link)– Seems to have been made redundant with the new online application process- Valid Passport for the duration of your visa period with a free page for the visa to be stuck on
- Completed IHS Healthcare form and paid the fee of up to £300 for 2 years in the UK. (link).
All the above needs to be original documents meaning no photocopies, eftpos receipts or falsified paperwork.
Application Process
The whole process starts with filling out the online application form. Most of this is fairly straight forward asking for details about you. As part of the application process you’ll get to pick the start date for when your visa will begin. Keeping in mind that this date must be within 3 months of when you are completing your application. So if you intend to arrive in the UK on the 1st September you’ll need to be applying for the visa no earlier than the 1st June of the same year.
Once completed you’ll be given the option to pick a time to attend your biometric appointment. This appointment is required for them to collect a copy of your finger prints which will be used when arriving in the UK on your visa. You’ll be asked to give (usually one finger) them when being processed by customs. The entire appointment takes all of about 30-45 minutes ( be there 15 minutes early) and you will need to bring with you the following documents:
- Completed and printed online application form
- bank statement and other supporting documents required for the application
- Passport photo meeting above mentioned specifications
- Appointment booking confirmation letter
- Passport
- IHS Reference Number
- A second valid form of ID like a drivers licence
Before you attend your biometric appointment you’ll need to pay the immigration healthcare surcharge (IHS). This is referenced as an IHS form. The first step is to run through this checklist to see if you need to pay a fee or not IHS healthcare checklist. If you are from Australia or New Zealand as of the 6th April 2016 you now need to pay a fee if you intend to live in the UK for longer than 6 months. The total fee is £300 to cover 2 years living in the UK.
To get your IHS reference number you need to go to this application page and click start now at the bottom. Follow the prompts and upon completion you will be emailed an IHS reference number that you should write down on your printed visa application. I’d also advise you to print off the email and take it to your biometric appointment as well due to how new this option is, it may save you some stress that way.
The biometric appointment process changed in late March 2014 and is now handled by a 3rd party visa processing company called VFS Global (except for in Adelaide which uses the old system). On attending one of their centers you’ll collect a token and wait for your turn to be called.
When called you will have your paperwork checked, pay your booking fee if applying in Brisbane, Canberra or Perth and then given a receipt which you need to keep for pickup of your passport if collecting it. At this time you can also pay to have your passport couriered back to you instead of returning to the processing office to collect it.
The second step is to have your fingerprints taken and have a digital photo of yourself taken, before they take all of your documents send if off on your behalf for processing. There is no need to provide your own envelopes for processing as the visa office is responsible for sending off and getting your passport back.
If applying in Adelaide then please follow the steps below, all others are to abide by the above.
You’ll leave the biometric appointment with a stamped application form and documentation on where to post your completed application and supporting documents off to. At last check you have 14 days from your biometric appointment to get your documents in the post to be processed.
It is advised to post your documents off in a platinum express post envelope and to included a second one for posting back to you. Take note of the tracking numbers on the envelopes for your own reference.
The above is a general overview for the entire application process. There have been major changes to the process this year (2014) with a revamped UK visa website and new processing options for applying. While I do my best to provide the most accurate information it is not always possible. If you notice a mistake or have details that can help others please leave a comment and I’ll update my records.
The Youth Mobility Visa FAQ
To make life easier I’ve also hand-picked a selection of questions and problems others have experienced and outlined them all below to save you trawling through over 500 comments.
Is the online application process confusing you?
In the last few weeks of 2013 the UKBA office rolled out a beta version of the new online application process. This has been met with quite a bit of confusion as sections of the application process have changed or aren’t being accepted correctly, which can be confusing if you’ve been researching the process online.
The problems I’m currently aware of are:
You receive an error when clicking Book Appointment – This error seems to have no solution other than to try and lodge your application again with a different email address.
UK Phone number being listed where your Australian one should be – This seems common and an obvious bug in the system, you can either leave it as is or hand write in the correct number. I imagine this will be fixed soon.
Your biometric appointment time is booked for say 2pm but it shows at 1pm on your letter – A fix seems to go back in and pick it again otherwise just turn up early so you don’t miss it.
I don’t have a UK Address or Phone Number
The new application form now ask for a UK phone number and address of you when applying. As you are yet to arrive in the UK I think this is beyond stupid to ask for but there you go. My advice is to put down the address and phone number of the place you intend to stay on arrival in the UK. This address will also form part of the where you will collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) from so be careful putting down just any address.
Not sure what a question is asking?
The Youth Mobility Visa form can be confusing so be sure to read the Guidance Notes provided by the UKBA office for help in deciphering exactly what they are asking for. This document lists notes for all questions asked on the forms to help you complete them.
How many points did you score for Attributes, English, and Maintenance?
On the application form you are asked for the number of points for Attributes, English and Maintenance. The English section does not need to be completed as it does not apply to this visa type. To calculate the numbers for the other box’s use the points calculator on the UKBA website or refer to your Appendix 7 form and get the numbers from that.
Can I fast track or get priority processing of my visa?
With the new changes to the visa process you can now apply to fast track your visa application. Costs to get priority visa processing are £100 for non-settlement applications and £300 for settlement ones. I believe this visa falls under the non-settlement category but can not confirm this.
To order priority processing of your visa you need to purchase it before attending your biometric appointment. To order the service you need to do so on this page. Then take the receipt of payment along to your biometric appointment for processing.
They aim to process all non-settlement applications within 5 days and settlement applications within 10. Again I believe this visa falls under the non-settlement category but can not confirm.
This service is not available to people attending an appointment in Adelaide.
Is there a biometric appointment office near me?
Processing offices for the biometric appointment are as below. Of note that all but Adelaide are run by VFS Global.
- Melbourne
- Sydney
- Canberra
- Brisbane
- Perth
- Adelaide
The address’ for these offices can be found here. If you don’t live near one of these offices then you’ll need to make the trip by land, sea or air to have your visa processed.
Do I post my application form off before the biometric appointment?
No you do not, even though the application form seems to suggest you should. You no longer post your application at all unless applying from Adelaide. All other applications are left with the visa office after your biometric appointment.
Where do I post my completed application to?
You only post your application if applying from Adelaide, all other applications are given to the VFS Global staff. The address to send your application to is:
UK Border Agency
GPO Box 2718
Sydney NSW 2001
It will then be forwarded to the processing hub in Manilla.
How long does the visa take to process?
Given my experience and feedback from others it takes anywhere between 1 – 4 weeks (usually within 2 though) from the time you post it. The processing times do vary depending on the time of year as well so recommend you check with the UKBA website here for a detailed listing of processing times.
However it seems with the new visa processing procedure a 2-3 weeks estimate seems correct at the moment.
I’ve not received any confirmation from the processing center, I’ve received one email, I’ve received nothing from the processing center?
The visa processing center has a history of not updating you on the process of your visa. Some people have reported getting emails to say their application was received, processed and shipped back while others have received nothing at all. You need not fear, there has never been a case of someones application form getting lost that I am aware of and most find their passport arrives the day after they freak out. All I can suggest is a little patience.
I have a question about the visa process who can I call or email?
You can contact the visa authority on 1300UKVISA ( 1300 858 472) but keep in mind this is a charged call of $3.50/minute and only payable via credit card. There is also an email address at [email protected] that advises you’ll receive a response within 10 days. Full details on calling for help can be found here.
Can I cancel my visa application?
If you’ve applied for your visa early or simply don’t want to go ahead with it you can cancel under certain circumstances. Refunds only seem possible if you’ve not attended your biometrics appointment yet. To cancel your visa go to the refund request page on the UKBA website and complete the form. You then wait 14 days to find out if you were successful.
Can I apply outside of Australia?
This seems to be possible but appears to be something new as previous documentation I’d read suggested you couldn’t. By visiting this section of the UKBA website you can select different countries around the world that accept visa processing. From what I can tell it will allow you to apply for a Tier 5 UK Youth Mobility Visa wherever there is a processing center providing you have a valid working visa with at least 6 months validity on it to be in that country.
When does the visa start?
You can pick the start date for your visa yourself during your application online but keep in mind it must be within 3 months of your application date. If you intend to travel around Europe before the start of your visa then you will be applying for your visa closer to the time in which you intended to fly out of Australia or allowing it to start before you get there meaning you miss some of the 2 years it is valid for.
When should the bank statement or letter be dated?
Your bank statement needs to be dated within 30 days of applying for the visa. So if you were to apply for the visa on the 1st of June your bank statement or letter must be dated after the 1st of May. The statement or letter must also show you have the total amount of funds required to meet the application requirements for the youth mobility visa.
The application form asks for my previous passports but I’ve lost it?
If you’ve had a children’s passport or an adult one and can no longer find it just state that on the form. If you have the passports great otherwise noting its lost seems to be perfectly acceptable.
Is this the same as the working holiday visa?
The working holiday visa was renamed to the youth mobility visa. During that change they also adjusted the conditions of the visa allowing you to live and work for the full 2 years of the visa where as before you could only work for 1 year.
What does family name mean?
The application will refer to your mother/fathers family name, this is asking about their maiden name.
Do I need a UK address or itinerary to apply?
Previously you did not need an UK address but on the new application form you are required to give one. You do not however need an itinerary when applying for the youth mobility visa. You will need to give a UK address to the customs officials upon entry into the UK. It is a requirement for all people entering the UK when completing the landing card.
Do I need to buy a return ticket?
There is no need to buy a return ticket when entering the UK on the Tier 5 youth mobility visa. With this visa you are essentially considered a citizen of the UK for the duration of the visa.
Will this visa let me stay in Europe for longer than 3 months?
The visa is only valid within the UK which encompasses England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Island. When travelling to Europe and in particular the countries that form the schengen zone you are only permitted to visit them for a period of 90 days within a 180 day period.
Will this visa let me work in Europe?
You will not be able to work for any company outside of the UK on this visa.
Can I enter the UK before my visa starts?
Yes but you will be entering on a tourist visa and as such are restricted to its limitations such as not being able to work. After your visa start date you should look to leave the country and re-enter on your youth mobility visa.
What if I have a DUI or criminal conviction?
During the application process you will be asked if you have any criminal convictions, this does not included fixed fines such as speeding or parking tickets unless you were required to attend court. If you have had a drink driving conviction or similar it is advised you included all paperwork when sending off your documents.
The visa office does perform criminal record checks so failing to document your record could be a reason for denying you a visa or them deferring your application until you offer more documentation to the entry clearance officer. To save potential problems it is recommended to get a print out of your court documents/extract, police reports and other supporting evidence including proof you’ve paid any fines associated with the incidents.
You are only provided a short time to provide this information if they request it so its better to have it all before you apply to save on missing out.
What is the BRP (biometric residence permit) and how do I get it?
From the 31st of May 2015 the visa office changed the visa permit process and introduced a biometric residence permit you collect once you’ve arrived in the UK. Full details on the BRP can be viewed on the UK website here
The short(ish) version of what this means is you now must enter the UK within 30 days of your noted start date for the visa. This is instead of being issued a sticker in your passport valid for the full 2 years. Now you now get issued a 30 day vignette which allows entry to the UK under your visa for a period of 30 days to collect your BRP card. If you arrive after that initial 30 day period you need to apply for another 30 day vignette (unsure of any fees or process to do this at the current point in time).
Once your visa is granted you’ll be provided with a decision letter stating at which post office and when you can collect your biometric residence permit card from. This is likely to be the closest post office to your noted address you used on the application. Please note the UK website states that you may get a penalty or your leave can be cancelled if you don’t pick up your BRP within 10 days of your arrival in the UK.
If you have queries about your BRP card or misplace documents needed to collect it you can refer to the following site for details https://www.gov.uk/biometric-residence-permits/need-brp.
At this point in time I’m yet to speak to anybody who has obtained their visa and collected a BRP card so am unable to verify any of the details above and provide it as reference only. There has been some great discussions in the comments below so if you have been issued a visa under the new process I’d love for you to leave a comment below to help others out that are looking to apply.
UPDATE 06/07/2015
An amazing follower named Mirabai has done some digging on the BRP process and found out what you do if you are unable to claim the permit within the 30 day window and received the following details from the United Kingdom Visas and Immigrations International Enquiry Service.
If the applicant has been granted a 30 day vignette and fails to enter theUK within the 30 day validity period, they must make an application for a replacement 30 day vignette by applying for a Transfer of Conditions, not as a new application for leave to enter. Application can be completed online on Visa4UK and it costs £122 to transfer your visa.
On Visa4UK website at: https://www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk, you need to select the Visa Type accordingly:
Reason for Visit: Other
Visa Type: Others
Visa Sub Type: Vignette TransferFurther information regarding biometric residence permit can be found on https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/biometric-residence-permits-overseas-applicant-and-sponsor-information.
So it seems if you don’t enter within that 30 day window your visa can become quite the bit more expensive. A real issue for those of you applying to get in before the age limit or those unable to travel over as planned.
Do you have a question not already answered above? Then leave a comment below and I’ll try and find the answer for you as soon as possible.
Hi great informative site you have here, Although I’m stuck with one section on the application that i can’t find an answer to.
On the application it asks
‘Are you a national of the country in which you are applying?’ i’m guessing this means of the uk?
to which i have selected no but then it ask’s ‘Please Enter Details of what permission you have to stay in this country’
Do i just put down youth mobility scheme for this or something else?
thanks.
Hi Trav, I believe that section is asking about what country you are applying from, which would be Australia. Your permission would be citizenship or birth cetificate etc.
Hi there,
This was really useful. I am looking to apply for my YMS visa right now, my fiancé is a UK citizen. I have a question for you – in your research did you come across any place where it states if I can marry whilst on the Youth Mobility Visa and then apply for a spouse visa before the end of the youth mobility visa? I know it states you cannot apply for indefinite leave to remain, but what about further leave to remain as a spouse? It is so confusing!! Thanks.
Hi Melanie, I’m afraid I can’t help you there as I’ve never done any research on that. If you were coming to Australia on the other hand I can tell you all about it.
Hey Aussie Nomad,
This is probably a very silly question but I just thought I would check. I received my visa on Christmas eve and leave in Feb. When I received my visa, it was displayed on one of the spare pages in my passport. I just wanted to check that when you arrive and when looking for work you only need to show your passport identification and the page where the visa is displayed. I just want to make sure I don’t need to take any paperwork from the visa application with me.
Sorry again if this is a silly question or if this has been mentioned above.
Thank you
Che
My Tier 5 working visa runs out in September, 2014 which country can I go to after my visa runs out so I can return to the UK on a vistor visa ?
Hi, when you tier 5 visa runs out you can go to any other country in europe. You just have to leave the United Kingdom which consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Hi,
sorry for this silly question but i need to be sure and its a bit confusing.
am i able to spend 6 months travelling in europe if i break that time up with a three-four month stay in the uk on a youth mobility visa ?
i really want to spend as long as possible in europe and am trying to find ways around it!
any hints would be helpful!
thanks 🙂
Hi Ally, for Europe you can spend 3 months in every 6 months in the schengen area. So you could do January to March in Europe and then you need to go to the UK for April to June before you can go back to the schengen area for July to September and so on. Hope that clears it up a bit for you.
Hi Aussie Nomad,
My partner and I(both Australians) are looking at moving overseas to work in 2015. We’re wanting to base ourselves either in London or Edinburgh.
My partner is eligible for UK working holiday visa but I’m not because of age (I’m 36). So I’m trying to find other visa options so I can travel and work at the same time.
Can you please advise on what options I have? I’d be interested to find out if I’m eligible for any visas that let me travel and work.
Please advise.
Cheers,
Arv
Hi Arvind, For yourself to get work abroad you’ll need to be sponsored by a company willing to hire you. This will have to be something you apply for before leaving Australia as you’ll need the company to file paperwork in the UK and then you do your part here in Australia. The difficulty is finding a company willing to hire you when they’ve never met you and then be prepared to file the sponsor paperwork as it costs around 1000 pounds.
This will also limit your travel ability as you are essentially moving abroad to work a full time job with just 4 weeks holiday a year. Once you go over the magic 30 age bracket, working in Europe becomes far more difficult. Most people have more luck going down the UK ancestry route if you have it.
What an awesome site – wish I had found it earlier! My son is 17, and is in London on a Tier 5 Charity visa. He will be travelling to the USA and Europe a couple of times. Will he have any problems re-entering the UK??? Thanks!!
Hi Dorothy, I’m afraid I don’t know anything about the charity visa but imagine like most visa’s that you can come and go as much as you please on it providing its still valid. Your best place to research this would be the UKBA site or call them directly.
Thank you. I have emailed the UKBA – will let you know what I find out …
Hey,
I recently finished my youth mobility visa and have been travelling Europe before heading home. I will have been out of the UK for 72 days before I was planning on going back as a visitor just to collect my stuff and say good bye to friends for a week before flying out. I called the British embassy and immigration to find out what I would need to prove I was not overstaying and they were super vague. They said I just need to prove I am not overstaying and that it was up to me to prove it. They also could not give me any indication as to the consequences if I was to be denied. I have heard horror stories of never being allowed back into the UK again even as a visitor. Can you shed some light on this for me?
Hi Tamara, I’ve had some interesting interactions with customs since my visa expired and that was some time ago now. The best form of proof you won’t stay is a return flight so have your ticket with you showing when you will be flying back to Australia. That should be enough as its a big investment cost wise.
As long as you keep calm with them and have your printed ticket saying when you’ll be leaving I doubt you’ll have any problems.
Hi,
Im not sure you can help me but i was wondering if there was any to go on the youth mobility visa for a year and then switch to one with a euro passport (I’m applying to get my maltese passport but it will take 18 months to get)
Thanks
Hi Sam, your youth mobility visa will only be valid in your Australian passport if you swap to an euro passport then you’ll be classified as a euro citizen so will not need the visa then.
Hi,
So I am travelling to Europe in March and I was about to apply for a youth mobility visa but I only just realized that my bank statement had to be at least 30 days old I don’t have enough time to apply in Australia I’m hopefully starting work in the UK in May after travelling through Europe so I was wondering if I was able to apply for the visa in Ireland as I am there for a couple of weeks.
Thank you
Hi Hannah, the statement doesn’t need to be at least 30 days out it needs to be dated within 30 days of your application so you are all good to apply now.
Okay thank you so much!
I have just completed online application now and I’ve got my biometrics appointment on Monday (17th)
Thank you so much I can stop worrying over it!
Hi Aussie Nomad,
First of all, thank you so much for all the information and effort you put into this fantastic site! It’s been incredibly helpful, and I’m so much more confident in submitting my application after reading all this information I didn’t have before. I do have a couple of queries about my application, and it would be brilliant if you could help!
-When applying via the new beta site, will I still need to submit an Appendix 7 form? I haven’t seen anything about that other than in older comments on here so I don’t think it’s still needed, but just checking in case.
-I’m an Australian citizen; is the Issuing Authority of my passport “Australia”? I tried typing “Australian Government” but it doesn’t give me that many characters to answer with.
-I’m not totally sure how to answer the “Total Points” section in the “Tier 5 YMS” page:
Nationality – Australian
Age – 18
Maintenance (Funds) – the exact amount in my account? (over 1800 pounds) And in AUD or GBP?
Total – 50?
Sorry if these are silly or have obvious questions, I just don’t want to take any chances! Thanks for your time!
Hi Kate, glad the sites been helpful to you.
As to your questions:
No the Appendix 7 seems to have now been removed from the application process and they have built it into the main online application.
The issuing authority will be Australia as its written in your passport.
The points section is the part brought in from the appendix 7 form. have a look at the appendix 7 form to get an idea on the points. I’ve not run through the new application process myself yet so I’m not 100% familiar with all the questions.
Hi there,
What an awesome website you have here, Cheers for all of the info.
Just a couple of questions…
I have heard rumours that the British Consulate in Sydney is open on Saturday mornings for biometric appointments? Is this true?
Also, my partner and I are leaving on the 14th April for approximately 5-6 months travel and plan to be in the UK September/ October this year. We realise that we need to apply for our Youth Mobility Visas before we leave but I was just wondering what date we should put on the application for our arrival (as our Visa will have ‘started’ 3 months before).
Thanks,
Katherine
Hi Katherine, I honestly don’t know about the opening hours of the Sydney consulate on Saturdays but when you get to booking your appointment during the application you’ll soon find out. if you find out I’d love to know to add it here for others.
For the visa date, set it to be 3 months from your application lodgement date. This is the furthest out you can go as the date needs to be 3 months out from application time. It will mean missing out on 3 months of your visa time but its a small price to pay for 5-6 months travel beforehand.
Thanks very much. We have completed the application, hopefully all goes well.
It turns out the Sydney consulate is only open weekdays!
Hey Aussie Nomad,
Thanks so much for putting together this, I have consulted it many a time!
I’m also glad to see I’m not the only one who put their mother’s current surname instead of her maiden name. I’ve sent everything with my passport off for processing.
If I was to call, do you think they would amend it? I’m just deciding whether I want to bring the error to their attention, or just hope for the best that it won’t matter.
The whole process has taken years off my life, especially with only 9 weeks until I’m meant to go!
Hi Shez, it’s always the obvious stuff that we mess up. Honestly I think you’d be fine if you didn’t say anything but if it will bring you some assurance then call them up and let them know.
Thanks!
I wish the others who had posted had provided an update on whether they got their visas through fine! That would put my mind at ease!
I can’t tell you about them, but if it helps in the 3-4 years since I started this site I’ve never heard of anybody being refused their visa.
Hi Shez!
My friend and I both did the same thing as you and put our mother’s current surname (as appears on passport) on our applications and both of us received our visa a few days ago after just 8 days with no problems!
Hope this puts your mind at ease and I know it can be worrying!!
Hi Dana,
Thank you so much for your reply! That definitely puts my mind at ease knowing that you both had no problems!
(And such a speedy processing time too)!
Just an update, I got my visa back within 11 days of applying. Got notification of it being approved in only 7 days after posting! Super speedy. Looking forward to getting over to the uk! 🙂
Hi there,
I’m wondering how to answer the ‘points claimed’ section of the visa application? I have to fill in the questions below but i’m unsure if i answer with either my details or the number of points for each section.
E.g.
Nationality – Australian
Age – 21
Maintenance (Funds) – The amount of money shown on my bank statement
Total – 50
or
Nationality – 30
Age – 10
Maintenance (Funds) – 10
Total – 50
Thanks!
Hi Georgia, I believe you fill in the points and not the actual details. That is what used to be the case with the old appendix 7 form that contained these details.
Hi all,
I submitted an application erroneously as follows.
‘Nationality – Australian’ etc.
Instead of the actual points.
‘Nationality – 30.’
I called the hotline the same day I submitted the application (such an expensive call!) & before my biometrics appointment to see if that would be problematic. The call centre staff member told me I would have to cancel my application as the ‘points were important.’ She said I would then need request a refund and submit a new application.
I did as suggested. Regarding the reason for refund I wrote an ‘inadvertent mistake made when filling out the form.’
My question is has anyone done the same? Were they refunded? How long did it take? It’s been 10 days and I haven’t heard whether my refund request had been received AND I am unsure whether they will accept my reason for a refund.
In the meantime I’m reapplying. It’s such a lot of money – I hope it’s refunded otherwise I’m out of pocket almost $500 – money towards my flight!
Would like to hear from others in the same situation.
Hi Jessica, I’m sure you’d have been fine applying for the visa the first time but the refunds to work and just take some time. I can’t say how long as I’ve only ever heard of one other person from memory that did it and left a comment on my site.
That is absolutely ridiculous that they said she should cancel her application. I made the same mistake but sent it off without knowing that I had done wrong. I wrote nationality New Zealand age (29) proof of funds (yes)! I’d be very angry and surprised if my application was rejected just based on that. On the form it does not specify how it should be filled out! Now I am freaking out that my application will be rejected.
Hi Aussie Nomad,
Thank you – in that case will reply with detail when I hear back so any others in my situation will hopefully be a bit more in the know.
🙂
I am losing sleep over this as I submitted the form exactly as Jessica did the first time… I wrote down the details rather than the points..
This is absurd as they aren’t really clear on this and then later advise an applicant to cancel and re-apply..! It’s been more than a week and I haven’t heard a single thing back from them (seems like the turn-around time for my area is a week in the recent weeks for the other applicants). I’ll let you know if I am rejected based on this mistake….. (If I don’t die from the heart attack..)
I just submitted my application. I wrote in these answers:
Nationality: Australian
Age: 24
Income: 7,0000
Total Points: 60
It seems now like that was completely wrong??
Will I still be accepted????
Hi Rose, Bianca & What!
I’ll let you know if I’m refunded. Bianca, maybe call the helpline and see what they say. They told me to cancel my application and request a refund. You might be advised the same. Do it before your biometrics appt or you won’t be eligible.
I am still waiting and have no idea whether i’ll see that money again. In the meantime i’ve reapplied.
I’ve already gone for my biometics appointment!! I’ll see what happens!
Bianca, I’ll let you know in a couple of days. I have got an email saying a decision had been made… It will be a nerve wrecking weekend
I got accepted! 🙂 It’s obviously fine to make that kind of small administration error!!
Congrats Bianca
Hi all,
I left this part of the application blank, as it wasn’t a required field! How can they reject you on missing something that was initially required? now i’m starting to worry and my appointment is on Monday… I can’t really afford to be out of pocket $400 either!
HI Aussie Nomad,
this info looks great for applying. however, my question is more so to do with the fact i have my visa but i don’t know what the rules are about finishing up?
I am going to be travelling post visa but am unsure of how the dates work. Can I work up to the second last day of my visa or do i have finish beforehand? Also is there a requirement to leave before the end date of my visa? I ask as i cannot find any information and wish some people have heard that you need to do certain things but that doesn’t make sense for why you would have an end date?
hope you can help!
erin
Hi Erin, when you are finishing up in the UK on your visa the only thing you need to do is leave the country by the date. You are then free to come back if you like afterwards on a tourist visa but be sure to have proof on onward travel as the customs folk get a bit difficult with people who have been living in the UK and now want to come back so soon.
Hey Aussie Nomad,
Great page you’ve got set up – extremely helpful!
I just have a question with regards to the application..
Part 5a (your family) asks if your partner is accompanying you or joining you later?
My boyfriend and I are planning on doing this adventure together.. we have been together for 4 years, not married, no children, both 22 and we currently do not live together..
So in the marital status would I put ‘single’ or ‘unmarried partner’ as we are not classified as being in a defacto relationship right – and im not sure what to put in the Part 5a section? I don’t want anything to back fire.. do I just put ‘no’ in this section and move onto the next question?
Your feedback would be much appreciated!!!
Hi Katrina, I think I’d put down unmarried partner for the martial status as that sounds like the best iption becaseu you are right about the defacto relationship, you need to live together for that to be true.
For part 5a it sounds like the question is more geared towards some of the other visa types, do you have any other options other than the two you listed?
Just an update from my previous enquiry. The Tier 5 Charity Visa, which my 17 year old son is using for his Gap Year, DOES allow for him to travel to and from other countries without problems re-entering. “The visa is issued valid for multiple entries through it validity. He should not have any problems getting back in while it is valid.” Again, thank you for all the information and advice. This is one site I will be coming back to, and certainly recommending!
Hi Aussie Nomad,
Fantastic page this is, I’ve found soo much information I just could not find anywhere else. I will be frequently visiting this website while on my travels.
One Question as I am worried about getting my visa, when the form asks: –
“Have you ever travelled outside your country of residence, excluding the UK, in the last 10 years?”
does this mean you have to list all your travels for the last 10 years?? or just one? does it matter?
Also, When it says please select how you would like your original documents to be returned to you.
the options are: –
1) in person
2) by post
3) in person with prepaid return envelope
i am just confused cause it says in person but i want to send a prepaid envelope??
Hi Sam, for the travel outside your country of residence I thought it was just a yes or no question. Does it ask you to list them or how is it worded?
For the sending of your passport back pick the by post option. I don’t get how it can be in person with a prepaid return envelope 🙂
Awesome thanks Aussie Nomad.
One last thing, I sent in my visa application and realised I am missing the last page with the signature on it!!!!! I double checked all the pages when I posted it so I don’t know how this happened!
I have signed the front page with all the information on it so they have my signature there.
What do you think the best thing to do is?? I leave the country for the UK on the 1st of April so I don’t have very long.
Cheers
Sam
Hi Sam, I’d probably call them up on the number I’ve listed above and explain the situation. They might allow you to scan and email it over to them or ask that you post it off as well.
It’s a difficult situation but for the sake of your sanity a call up that costs you a few dollars would be worth it in my opinion.
Hi THE AUSSIE NOMAD
Thank you so much for this it has been incredibly helpful.
I just have a question on the timing, sorry if this has been answered before.
I intend to arrive in London 20 July, but require my passport for travel 10 May from which I will be travelling until landing in the UK.
What do you think is optimal time to apply for this Visa. Would 20 April be too late? If any earlier I will be missing out on a few weeks on Visa time is that correct?
Thanks
James
Hi James, you can only apply for the visa within 3 months of your intended arrival in the UK so for you it would be the 20th of April. Given you are leaving OZ on the 10th of May I’d be apply as soon after that date in April to ensure you don’t miss out on any time for your 2 year visa.
if you apply before the 20th of April then yes you’d just be missing a few weeks on your visa as it would start before you arrived in the UK.
On average people have been getting their visa’s approved in 1-2 weeks so you should have enough time if you applied on the 20th.
Hi
Apologies if this has been answered in an earlier comment, there’s so many! I’m looking to apply for the youth mobility visa starting approx June 2014. Just checked my passport (NZ) and it expires in Feb 2016. Do you think I’ll have to renew my passport now so it will be valid for the entire period of my visa or will it be alright to just apply for a new one from the UK?
Thanks 🙂
Hi Donna, As long as you passport is valid for 6 months you will be ok but when you do renew your passport you’ll have to carry both your old and new passports when you travel as the old passport will have the visa stamped in it.
If I want to travel Europe for 1-2 months after my visa expires. Do I have to leave the UK before expiry or can I leave a little (like a few days) after? Also, what if I want to return to UK after my Europe trip to pick up some items and head back to Australia from there. What are the requirements? eg: whilst I have been living here I have purchased some items/gifts for returning home but will be useless when travelling Europe, so wish to leave it here at a friends place.
Hi CC, I’d always leave before your visa expires. You don’t want to give the UK customs folks any reason to give you trouble when you re-enter.
You can re-enter the UK just fine after your visa expires on a tourist visa but be sure to have proof you don’t intend to stay in the country like flights home or similar. The customs folks tend to be a difficult with people who’ve had a visa to live and work in the UK. Worried you plan to come back and stay again i think.
Hi,
Thanks so much for the information firstly.
I am currently working in UK under a tier 2 visa sponsored by my current employer. However, I find it difficult to change my job as not every company is willing to sponsor my tier 2 visa. therefore, I am thinking of getting myself a youth mobility visa.
Will my currently valid tier 2 visa be a restriction to my application for a tier 5 youth mobility visa?
Thanks,
EM
Hi Em, to apply for the youth mobility visa you will need to return home to Australia. I’m not sure on the requirements about having both visas but given you need to return home to get the visa I’m guessing your sponsored visa will stop as you’ll cease employment with the company you are with.
Just keep in mind the youth mobility visa is only valid for 2 years and once thats up you’ll have to leave the country or get sponsored by another company again to return to live and work there.
Hi,
Thanks very much. I have an update and a follow up question.
Now I have successfully got my tier 5 youth mobility visa on my British National Overseas (BNO) passport. However, I am still with my existing employer with my home country passport.
So, I have 2 passports with 2 visa.
However, I have got further information that my current tier 2 ICT visa restricts me from changing a new employer. Now I have got a job offer from a new employer, can I just use my tier 5 visa on my BNO passport or I will still be bounded by my tier 2 ICT visa restriction?
Thanks,
EM
Hi Em, I’m afraid I’m not really sure on the answer. But in theory if one visa is tied to one passport and another is tied to the other you should be able to leave the country and re-enter on the opposite passport and be all set.
Hey mate,
I have successfully received a youth mobility visa. However, I was wondering if we are covered for health insurance under the scheme? Do you suggest organising private health insurance from Australia for the entire duration of the 2 years? It is very experience to do this, so I was looking at other options but happy to do so if required.
Cheers mate,
Billy
Hi Billy, when you enter the UK you are covered under their health system (just like medicare here). I would recommend registering with a doctor when you arrive and settle into a place to live so you can see them if need be. But I’ve been told you can just turn up at the hospital emergency departments like here in australia and be seen as well.
I never paid to see a doctor or for a hospital visit for the entire time I was in London. In some ways I think the NHS over there is much better than our medicare.
I’ve got details on the health side of things listed in my moving to london post here:
http://www.theaussienomad.com/travel-tips/moving-to-london/
hey! this is a great website, and it’s super helpful. Thank you for uploading all of this information, it’s really exciting reading about all of this and it’s getting me psyched about applying soon 🙂
I just wanted to know what I should put down as my UK address and phone number? I don’t know anyone there, and my intention was to find a place after arriving there. Until I find a permanent location I was thinking of staying in a hostel. So, do you think I should use the address and number of the hostel as my UK address and just have it changed when I find a place to stay?
Hi Sarah, the whole asking for an address on the application is so a pain for people and completely useless as people move all the time. Just put down the address and number of the hostel you intend to stay at on arrival. After that your address is going to change as is your number and as far as I know you only need to note an address on the arrival card each time you re-enter the UK from trips to Europe etc.
Hi Aussie Nomad,
Firstly, Thank you so much for sharing your advice and experience! *hugs*
I’m thinking/planning on applying for the YMV for mid-August. So my long distance bf and no longer be long distance.
I would like to know what’s the best way to search and apply for a job, without actually being in the same country! – I don’t want to be wasting time nor do I want to have to depend on my bf too much.
Hi Andrea, finding work I believe is easier done once you are there as most companies are going to want to interview you and so on. And if they have to deal with a skype call to do it, they can be put off as its a lot more work than having you turn up at their office.
Also if you are just after bar work then you’ll only be able to get that if you are in the country.
Your best option is the get the bf to look around for you and help line up interviews for when you arrive I believe.
Hi Aussie Nomad,
This website is great – very helpful, thank you.
I need to travel 10 May (travelling for a few months before entering UK), what would be the latest you would recommend I apply for the Visa? Is it still averaging 2 weeks these days? Thanks
Hi Martin, for me i’d be apply a month out from the date you intend to leave the country. most people get their visa back in 2 weeks and that extra time gives you a bit of breathing room should something go wrong.
Hi Aussie Nomad,
I just applied for my Visa today, and just had my biometric appointment, which is also where I submitted my forms to be mailed. I realized after I drove 3 hours home, that I forgot to include my previous passports in my application. And according to this: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/261451/documents-t5-yms.pdf the previous passports are required to affirm historic travel history.
(I DID, luckily, include my valid and most recent passport.)
Aside from my banging my hand on my forehead repeatedly and scavenging the internet for advice, I’m hoping that they will simply inform me that I had missing information and they will let me mail it in. Do you have any experience with this kind of situation?
In addition to that mistake, I realized, today again, that I didn’t reference the stamps in my old passports for my travel history. I simply did my best guesses (which were pretty close, but not all entirely accurate.) Is this mistake going to cause me trouble as well?
Thank you in advance for any or suggestions you can provide.
Christina
Hi Christina, when you filled out the form did you list you had previous passports? I generally recommend people say they are lost as its logistically just easier. I’ve never heard of the UKBA contacting you for additional information before so imagine you’ll be fine. But worst case call their office on the number in the post to see what they would prefer.
Listing your travel history is a new addition to the visa process so I’m not up to speed on what it requires but as long as you’ve listed out everything as best you can I’d imagine there will be no problems. it never used to be a requirement so I doubt it’s a big problem.
I DID, I did, I listed I had previous passports. I had read somewhere in preparation for filling out the forms, if you’ve ever lost a passport or had one reported stolen, it would jeopardize your submission. So I thought, since I had them, I would say I did!
I’ll update this on what happens in case anyone else has a similar issue. (Here’s to hoping.)
Thanks for your time, A.N~
C.
That’s a first I’ve ever heard a lost/stolen passport can jeopardise an application and I’d probably call bullshit on that to be honest. But as you had them it did make sense to say you had them.
I honestly think you’ll be fine Christina but would be great to hear how you get on and if you do have a problem.
Hi christina, how did you go with your visa? On my application I stated that I still had an old passport and I’m wondering whether to send it off with my other documents!
Well good news; just as you said there were no issues! Received word that my visa has been successfully processed today! woohoo!
Great to hear Christina, next stop the UK
Hey, thanks for the write up, very comprehensive. Was just wondering, I leave in 4 weeks on (if its accepted) a tier 5 (working holiday) visa, i sent it in an express post envelope but didnt give them a spare for the return to my house… will this jeapordise the chances of it coming within the 4 weeks you stated??
Cheers
Hi Louis, I honestly don’t know the answer to that one. I’d call the UKBA office on the number above and see what they say. I’m guessing it could delay things as they do specify you provide a return envelope but I’m sure you aren’t the first and won’t be the last to forget it.
Hi I just submitted my application but after I paid it had
5. Biometric Enrolment
Biometric Enrolment Not Required
and sure enough in the summary it says “Appointment not required”
Reading up on it I notice that they are changing the UK Visa service and outsourcing to VFS Global with the centre in Sydney opening on the 17th of March. Wonder if I am meant to wait for that or is it really not required…
Hi Jay, to be honest this is the first time I’ve ever seen that before. I’m not aware of any changes to how they process the biometric part of the application but find it very strange you would not need it. I am aware that the visa site has changed somewhat this year but up until around a week ago people were still having to have their biometric appointment.
Your best bet will be to call the UKBA office I think to be sure of what is next. Normally after the biometric appointment you are given the address to send your visa paperwork off to. Was that provided once you completed your application?
The form on completion provided this
5. Biometric Enrolment
Biometric Enrolment Not Required
Please select your country to view details of where to send your application and supporting documents for your location.
You must take your printed application, supporting documents and the appropriate fee (if applicable and/or unless paid online with this application) to the address shown below.
UK Border Agency – Australia GPO Box 2718
Sydney
NSW 2001
So it still has the address I’m meant to mail it to. It’s all very confusing as I think with VFS you just submit it at their centres.
Very strange, everything on their website states you need to attend an appointment still so I’m all out of ideas mate.
I recently applied for a tier 2 visa from the usa and also got ‘appointment not required.’ I can’t find any info about this – would love to hear Jay’s resolution if he sees this
thanks
Hey AN,
I am hoping you could please assist me in providing some information relating to the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Visa which I currently hold.
My visa is up on June 5th of this year and I have been told that is difficult to travel in and out of the UK within the last month of this. I am looking to re-enter the UK after this date and do some further travel around the UK – could you please advise the best method for doing this and if it is at all possible?
Hi Katie, I travelled a little right at the end of the visa and then re-entered the UK afterwards so have a little insight for you. I never had problems coming and going at the end of my visa but you might get a painful customs official so be sure to fill out your landing card saying you are only staying x number of days and if you have proof of a ticket out of the country have that with you as well. Anything to prove you won’t stay can help get them over their power trip.
it’s also possible to return after your visa has expired but I can guarantee you’ll have some form of trouble with the customs folk. Every time I’ve tried to re-enter the UK after my visa expired (even a year later) I have to deal with them thinking I’m coming back to live illegally.
The only real defence you have is proof of flights out of the country and anything that can show you have enough money to support yourself. I had to get all my credit cards out on one occasion and even then they almost wouldn’t let me in.
Legally there is no reason for them to deny you so just have as much information as you can to satisfy them and all should be ok. Fingers crossed you get a nice customs official, I seem to always get the difficult ones.
Does anyone know if they ever exceed the annual quota for Australia? Has anyone been told sorry too many applications already granted? Thanks
Martin I’ve never heard of the quota being exceeded and know of people who applied very late last year so I don’t think there will be a problem.
Hello ,
If the company that I work for during my 2 year visa offers me the chance to have a full time position …Does this mean that I can continue working for them or would I have to turn down the offer?
Thanks
Tanya
Hi Tanya, you can continue to work for them providing they are willing to sponsor your visa to stay. It’s more than just offering you a job they need to complete some visa paperwork and you need to return to Australia to lodge it and get it approved before returning.
Hi Aussie Nomad,
I’m a bit confused what to do at the moment!
I want to apply for a UK work visa (I arrive in November), however I will be working in a summer camp in America on a J1 working visa for 5 months (less than 6 months).
I can’t apply in Australia due to the dates but I am just wondering if it is possible (and how) I can apply for this visa in the US!
Thanks, Krystal
Hi Krystal, you can still apply for the visa before you leave it just means you won’t get the full 2 years time to stay there as the visa will have to start 3 months after you leave Australia. If you can handle that then you shouldn’t have a problem.
I am wondering what i do with my bank statement. do i email it??? provide it at the meeting???
Hi Darcy, you send off your bank statement with the rest of your application details in the post to the visa processing office.
Ok sweet also cause i got a loan but plenty of available funds will this affect the process of applicatiion???
They won’t know you have a loan as you don’t provide details on that, just proof of the 1800 pounds.
Just thought it might look a bit sus with a big credit comin into my account. the money is mine but just comes from my extra money i pump into my loan
Hi Aussie Nomad,
Thanks for his post, very useful so far!
This could be a tough question, but if you’re able to help me out that would be great.
I want to apply for a YBS commencing early July this year. The problem is, I currently work in Korea and won’t be back in Oz until 14th April. I’m then due to go to France for two months on 29th. I know this time slot is too short to allow the visa to process, but I’d rather not have to fly back to Oz after France. If it’s impossible to apply for the visa from France, would it be possible to do the biometrics stuff in Oz and then send the documents from France when I get there?
Hi Rynagh, you can apply for the visa from France and do it all there if you have a valid work permit to be in the country, if not you’d have to return to Australia I’m afraid.
In the section where it asks if there’s any other passport held previously, I was holding the passport from my birth country, but is no longer valid after I became a citizen of NZ, do I still need to put that in the form? I don’t have any information on that passport anymore.
Thanks
Hi Shelly, I’d just put down no other passports as you are now on your first passport for NZ.
Hello Shelly, any updates on how you dealt with this? Would appreciate it. Thank you.
Hi Aussie Nomad
I don’t think there is any solution to this, but I thought I’d ask. My daughter left Australia two weeks ago for the US.
She is about to start a 10 week tour of South America and after that wants to go to the UK and work.
The problem is, for some reason she did not get her Tier 5 Youth UK working visa before she left Aust.
Is there any way she could get it say in Argentina..(she is there for two weeks at the end of the tour)..
…..or can she enter the UK as a tourist and then apply for her working visa there without having to return to Aust?
Any advice would be appreciated, or any numbers we could ring to seek advice.
No problems with the money etc..she also has an English Granny & has her birth certificate so could also apply for the ancestry visa if it is any easier
Thanks for your help
Pat
Hi Pat, wish I had good news for you but as far as I’m aware you can only apply for the Youth Mobilty Visa if you have a work permit to be in the country you wish to apply from. So your daughter would need a work permit for Argentina to be able to apply and even then it might not be possible depending on the options the UK offer there. Otherwise its coming back to OZ to get it.
An ancestry visa would be your best bet I just don’t know if you can apply for that from the UK or if it has to be applied for from your home country. Knowing the UK I bet they require you to be in OZ for it.
Hi Pat
Does she have any interest in working in Canada? Even if she doesn’t, this is probably a hard way to do it, but she could apply for a Canadian working visa and once she had that approved she would be able to apply for the UK visa from there. I am a Kiwi and I applied for mine from Australia, I just sent the paperwork to my mum in NZ and she sent it on, so she could send the paper work to you and you could send it on. The Canadian working visa was quite straight forward and you didn’t need any fingerprints. But obviously that will all take processing time etc
Hi Pat
I’m currently in the UK on my ancestry visa, and if it’s your first application for an ancestry visa, you have to leave the UK and return to your country of residence, in order to apply (If you’re extending it you can do this from the UK). I was in the UK on a YMV, and had to leave my job, fly back to NZ, apply for ancestry and try and prove i was going to return to find work!! All a very round-about way of doing things…. However, that was 3 years ago, and as they’re always changing the rules, i’d check the UKBA website, to be sure. On the plus side, i had my confirmation in about 4 days, and my passport back to me a week after i applied! Hope this helps
Cheers
Bek
Hi Aussie Nomad,
Thanks for your wonderful guide.
I only have 1 question: I am applying the week before my 31st birthday, am I able to pick a date 3 months in advance for my visa’s start date or does it need to be starting on my 31st birthday? I have had conflicting information from websites and even a visa ‘broker’.
Thanks
Adam
Hi Adam, as far as everything I’ve read about the age limit you have to have applied when you are 30 so thats fill out your form online and paid the money. The application is valid at that stage so its irrelevant if you turn 31 before you get to the UK because of your visa start date.
But if you are so close to the date I’d be applying as soon as you can and if that means missing out on a month of your visa time because you haven’t left I think it’s worth it.
Hi AN,
Thanks for your reply.
What I meant was, choosing the visa start date: can I choose a date + 3 months like normal or do I have to choose my 31st birthday as my visa start date?
Cheers,
Adam
Hi Adam, you can pick whatever start date you like as long as you’ve paid your money before your 31’st bday as far as I’m aware. But to be 100% sure I’d call the UKBA office on the number in my post just to be on the safe side. I’d hate to steer your wrong and have you miss out on the trip.
Thanks, that clears things up.
Unfortunately for days now no one picks up that phone number, and the 1902 number on the UKBA website charges you $3.95/minute and again, no one answers.
Would you say it would be best to apply with the start date + 3 months and then ask the question at the biometric interview?
Just an update, I managed to get hold of someone at the visa office via email and this was their reply:
“Good Morning
The latest date we can put on your visa is the day before your 31st
birthday.
If you were not turning 31, we could postdate the visa start date by a
maximum amount of 3 months.
Hope that helps”
Hi Adam, thanks or the feedback from the UKBA office. Good to get some feedback on the query as well. It would seem you have to make the start date the day before your bday so in that case I’d be applying right away.
Very late reply but the information they have given you is incorrect, the important thing is to apply before you are 31 and you can specify a start date up to 3 months later.
Unfortunately the UKVI ‘help’ line often gives out information that is inconsistent with the official immigration rules.
Hi!
I have just applied for a youth mobility visa and wrote somewhere on the application that my estimated arrival was the 1st of june. However, I recieved a really good deal a booked my flight for the 7th of May. Assuming my visa is approved, is this going to be a problem? Thank you
Hi Molly, if your visa is approved for the 1st of June it means your visa won’t start till that day. So if you enter the UK before that you’ll be entering on a tourist visa and not your working visa. To activate it you’d need to leave the country after the 1st of June and re-enter. So as long as you don’t want to work before the 1st of june all should be ok.
Just be prepared for the customs folks in the UK to be a bit annoying since you are entering before the visa in your passport is valid.
Great. Thanks for your help so far! I am yet to have my biometrics appointment and havent posted any documents. Is there any way of changing it at this stage of the application process? Or any advice? 🙂
Hi Molly as you’ve not had the appointment you should be able to just adjust the date on the printed out application you have to send off. I’d ask when you have your fingerprints taken but otherwise just put a cross through the date on the form and put in the new date of your arrival into the UK.
Hi aussie nomad. i applied and got my youth mobility scheme approved around february 2013. however due to personal issue i couldnt go, but i never cancelled it or anything. so now im able to go so my question is can i still go? i read you can only apply for it once?? does it count if i never actually went to the UK? also if im able to can i use the visa i got from 2013 or do i have to apply for a new one? thanks in advance
Hi Brian, if you have already had the visa granted from Feb 2013 then you are just over a year into the visa so could still fly out to the UK to make the most of it now as its currently valid.
Even though you never arrived in the UK the visa still started as its only valid for the time period stamped in your passport. You can’t apply for another visa or get this one re-started either.
Hi Brian, sorry if this has already been asked,(I tried to look through all the posts but there is so many!)
Have you ever heard of anyone being asked to prove their maintenance funds (e.g. show a bank statement) when they are entering the UK? I know you have to send it off when you apply, but I will be travelling for three months before I enter the UK so most of that money will be gone..
Thanks!
Hi Pip, I’ve had to try and prove I have enough money to visit the UK but that was AFTER my visa had expired and I was entering the UK again. Coming and going while on the visa makes the UK customs far far easier than you’ll get it any other time. You just breeze on through like a local.
Hello! Your website has been amazingly helpful during my application process.
I have just received my visa in the mail which I am so happy about! (after posting it, it arrived about 2 and a half weeks later)
The only thing is… it says its valid from the 16th of April… however my flight arrives on the 15th of April…
(I forgot I put the 16th on my application when I booked the flight)
I know it may seem really silly, but will this be a problem?
Thanks again for the helpful website 🙂
Hi Lauren, the only problem you are going to have is that when you enter the UK you’ll be doing so on a tourist visa. You’ll need to leave and re-enter the country after the 16th to enter on your youth mobility visa which will have working rights etc.
I’d imagine the customs folks might ask you why you are coming a day early so as long as you are prepared for that and can tell them you’ll be leaving/coming back all should be ok.
Thanks for the quick response, I’ve decided to change my flight to London for the 16th. Lucky I purchased a flexible ticket! Cheers for the advice 🙂
Lauren that sounds like a far easier solution, enjoy London
Hey Nomad.
Just a couple of questions.
Now with the online forms, I dont need to print the VAF9 form correct? And do I also not need the Appendix 7 form?
So basically when sending in my application I just need
A print out of the online application
passport
bank statement
and thats it?
Also I made 2 mistakes on my application 🙁 wrote 40 points instead of 50 and mums last name now rather than maiden name. can i cross these out and correct them and sign with initials…similar to making a mistake on a passport application?
Thanks soo much!
Hi Gen, you just print off the online application yes no need for extra documents now.
For sending off yes you have your form, your bank statement and passport. For the mistakes I’d just cross them out and initial them. You can’t do anything else and i doubt they will get to upset.
Hello The Aussie Nomad
Finally a site that makes sense and has all (nearly) the answers, great work
The answer to my question is probably here some where I just can’t seem to find it.
Basically do I need 6 months or a certain time frame left before my passport expires after the 2 years.
I intend to start the visa on the 10 of June so the 2 years takes me out to the 10th of june 2016 and my passport expires october 2016.
I am a little pushed for time so have already paid and booked my biometrics but I can cancel this if I find out the answer to this isn’t to my liking.
I am attempting to contact the Visa office but it seems they do not like answering their phone.
Again this site is a blessing to many a confused traveller, well done you.
Cheers Thomas
Hi Thomas, glad you’ve found the site helpful. I try to keep up with the changing system for the visa but it’s not always possible.
As to your question you’ll be find to apply for the visa since you have more than 6 months validity on it. All the visa needs for you to apply is 6 months so as you have 2 years and 6 months there are no problem at all. After the visa expires however I’d be looking into getting the passport renewed to save on problems entering other countries.
Hi Aussie Nomad,
I have a similar question and would like to get confirmation on your above response.
Do you only need 6 months validity on your passport from the start of the visa application date? Or 6 months validity from the end of the 2 year visa period?
I guess another way of putting it is can you apply to renew your Australian passport, during the 2 year period of the visa?
Like Thomas above me I am going to apply for the visa with a start date in early August. My passport expires in June 2016, so for the purposes of application, has approximately 2 years remaining. However it will run out prior to the end of the visa and I plan to renew whilst in the UK.
Hi Brent, my understand is you need at least 6 months validity on your passport to apply for the visa. If it is to expire while abroad you just need to renew it at your closest embassy which can be done in London.
Hi Aussie Nomad!
Gotta say, just like everyone else, I have found this blog so helpful whilst trying to apply for the YMS Visa. And now that I have been accepted (YAY!) I will continue to read on with your guides for setting up in London etc.
In case anyone is interested, I thought I would put up my visa timeline as that was the most stressful part (so far)-
Application: 25th Feb 2014
Biometrics: 5th March 2014 (in Adelaide S.A)
Sent forms: 5th March 2014 (the ink on the stamp was barely dry as I raced to the Post Office!)
Sydney GPO: 6th March 2014
And then…. nothing…. for 14 days!
Visa Despatch Email: 21st March 2014
Visa/Passport arrived: 25th March 2014 (the day before my birthday – early present!)
And so my partner (who has a British passport) and I are off on the 21st May 2014
Hope that puts some minds at ease for the dreaded waiting game! 🙂
Thanks for the feedback on your application process Jo. Always helpful to get ideas from people on how long everything took. Enjoy your time abroad.
Thanks for the timeline JO,
Can you tell me the date on your Visa? Is it 3 months from the 25th (application) or when they issue it? Will make a difference for me as I am travelling for more than 3 months prior…
Thanks
Hi Martin
The date on my Visa is 21st May, which just makes it inside the 3 month requirement as my application was the 25th Feb.
I randomly picked that date, before I realised it had to be within 3 months, but luckily I scraped in by 4 days!
Thanks Jo and Aussie Nomad,
Okay, now I am a little worried. I applied last night as follows:
Date of application submitted online: 27 Mar 2014
Date of planned arrival in the UK: 17 Jul 2014
Now I know 17 July is beyond 3 months from my application date, but it is the date I plan to arrive in the UK. I need to apply this early as I need my passport back to travel on the 23rd April.
There was also another question earlier asking what date do I intend to travel which had a drop down date box which would only let me select up 3 months (27 June). I selected this. But it does not appear on the application form.
I am slightly confused/worried.. should I be?
Thanks!
Hey Martin,
I made the same stuff up and applied to leave 13 days or so after the 3 month period (applied 7th of May 2015 and am to arrive August 20th 2015 – 100 or so days). Did you have any issues or did you just lose a few days on your VISA as they back-dated it?
Cheers.
Hi Aussie nomad, just a question regarding the bank statement for the visa documents. I’m unable to receive a statement til the end of the month but have a print out of my transaction history that’s stamped and signed by the bank. It’s in black and white and has the logo on the top. Will this be accepted instead of the bank statement? How strict are they on this? My biometrics appointment is 3 days away so I’m starting to freak out now!
Hi Hannah, as long as the bank details have the official bank stamp and signature on it i don’t see a problem. Ideally it would have been better to be printed by the bank so its on their letterhead and therefore not black and white but you have the important stamp to prove its real so all should be good.
Thanks again Aussie Nomad,
Okay so I have completed my application and paid. But this is weird.
I selected a biometric appointment time of 10.20am. This shows correctly on the confirmation PDF, but on the Visa application complete page it shows 9.20am. I am confused and worried.
Has anyone else had this issue/bug?
Thanks
Martin
When in doubt Martin just turn up early. Never heard of it before but these things happen.
Hi Martin, this happened to me too. I booked in for 9.30, and that’s what it says on my email confirmation. But the booking confirmation says 8.30. I was going to just go at 8.30 to be in the safe side, but please keep me updated if you find a resolution.
Hi Nat,
Glad to know I am not the only one. So what I did was go back to the View Appointment page, selected Update Appointment and selected a new time of 10.10am. I then go the confirmation page with 10.10am. I then cross checked against 1) the Print Confirmation PDF and the Visa Application Complete page (accessed by clicking View Payment).
Somehow everything is now in sync which gives me a bit of comfort. I will probably go early Monday morning and will post back to let you know how it goes!
Cheers
That’s great to know, thanks Martin! I think I shall follow the same steps. I look forward to hearing how you go. Good luck!
We had the same issue with our applications and I just turned up at in Brisbane at the time I had selected (which was correct in the confirmation email) and that was OK, even though the official appointment document stated an hour earlier. Seems to be a glitch in the system, which I assume is related to daylight savings. (Our visa application was for Ancestry/dependent visas).
Hi Aussie Nomad,
I have applied for my Tier 5 youth mobility visa and had the biometric appointment (on the 21st March) but didn’t realize I had to get proof of my criminal conviction until after which can take up to 28 days to receive! I am freaking out that it won’t come in time and my application will be cancelled. It is the last thing I neeed before sending it away.
Is there anything I can do? Send it without the police record and attach a note that I will send it later? Is that even an option?
thank you so much.
Hi Niki, to be honest I’m not sure of the best answer. I’d either call or email the UK office and get feedback from them. I’d wait it out a week or two and hope the paperwork comes in time otherwise send it off with what you have and then send more details if asked.
Hi, What did you do in the end? I got myself into the same situation and sent it off with Court documents only. Did you get your visa? Was processing long? Thanks
Morning,
How long was it before anyone recieved a confirmation email from the hub in Manilla?
And how long has anyone waited for their visa to be approved for YMS visa? I’m not leaving until June so I’m not stressing, though just slightly worried I’d like to know my passport is safe, I sent it in 10 working days ago to uk immigration office in Sydney via express post…eeeeek
Cheers
Hi Maria
I sent my Visa off on the 5th March and didn’t receive a confirmation email from Manila. I waited 12 working days before receiving an email from Manila stating that my Visa had been despatched etc. and had my passport back in my hands by the 25th March (14 working days in total).
Hope that helps!
