Why I have decided to travel

Why I have decided to travel

Travel… that elusive beast that you think “hey I would love to do that”. Then reality sets in and you switch over to thinking no I could never do that its all too hard. I once thought that too. Hell it still scares the bejesus out of me thinking of all the parts I need to get organized before I go.

I’ll let you in on a secret though, its also the most exciting feeling. Knowing that I’m going to be traveling to different countries and working in completely different environment’s is what makes it so exciting.

After spending 6 years working in the IT Industry, relationships that go and up and down and never really saving money just getting it and spending it. I was stuck in a rut. I had done some traveling in the last couple of years to Hong Kong, Singapore and Phuket. So my taste buds were already wet for travel.

The turning point was catching up with an old high school friend and chatting to him about what he had been up too. After telling me the story of how he backpacked around Europe, lived and worked in London and then traveled all the way back to Australia via Asia I was hooked. It was the perfect escape, no adventure I wanted for the next chapter of life.

An over used quote I know but something that now sums up exactly how I feel.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” — St. Augustine

For now its time to prepare for that next page. So subscribe to my RSS feed or follow me on Twitter and join me on the adventure. Maybe I’ll prompt you to make the leap too and we can catch up in a pub or hostel somewhere and discuss the pages of our book we are writing each and every day.

Hey Carlo, thanks for stopping by. Yes its defiantly the lifestyle that is drawing me in. I can only hope that in the next 6 months it all comes together and I can set off to experience some of the great places the world has to offer.

Perhaps I’ll even be buying you a beer in a pub somewhere in the future 🙂

Hey, I came across your blog when you linked to an article at Matador Trips (I’m one of the editors there). I’ve been working in IT since 2000, and am about to quit again and hit the road. I’ve been traveling for a few years now, it really is a lifestyle, and not just something “fun” or an escape from anything that people like to think.

Anyway, you should consider joining the Matador community (http://matadortravel.com), not just because I’m plugging it, but because it’s full of inspiring people – travelers, writers, photographers, nomads – who interact daily. Anyway, check us out and if you like what you see, sign up and start making friends. I’m “vagabonderz” there.

All the best in your travels!
    Cheers.

Hey flip, thanks for the well wishes. I’m sure one way or the other I’m going to have one hell of a travel story.

I have travelled most of my life, but a year ago I gave up my house and started being an Earth Pilgrim. I live and work on the road. Go to the link for some ideas on how I went about it.

haha Monica its a deal I promise.

I’ll let you in on a secret I got lazy and didn’t design the site myself I got it from http://is.gd/5W5bK. If you ever need some help with all that let me know after all my day job is as an IT Consultant.

Promise me you’ll take lots of pictures and write about your bathroom experiences. 😀

P.S. I love how your blog is so clean. I wish I could decipher HTML, CSS, Java Script and all that jibberish so I could build a site the way I like.

Hey I just came across your blog (actually yesterday, but I just got around to reading it). I’m going to start with this post and read forward – but I like it so far!

Hey Darcy, thanks for the comment. Hope you enjoy what you find and maybe some of it will be useful to you. Are you looking to travel?

      • DARCY March 19, 2010 at 7:19 PM #

Yeah, definitely. I’m at Uni now, but I’ll definitely be traveling in the near future. Perhaps I’ll take a break from uni, maybe I’ll wait until after. I do know that I will definitely be traveling some time soon, though! Until then it’s mostly just a matter of saving money and such.

I hear you on the saving money part. Once you get that down the rest is easy I think.

If you want to really get into saving your dollars sign up for a bank account with ubank.com.au. They give great interest rate and you do it all online.

I’ve had no problems with them at all and its helped having the money away from my main accounts. If I couldnt see it I couldn’t spend it.

Yeah I have some saving accounts set up through my current bank, and my Mum works for them so it’s just easier to stick with them. And they’re online accounts so it is so much easier to save when you can’t actually access it without phoning up or using the internet.
